Timing Belt Or Chain

We are wondering if the 2013 EXL 4 cyl comes with a timing chain or belt? Thanks.

Thankfully we get a chain.

I4 = timing chain
V6 = timing belt

It is true. Even at Acura, we see them go out. (Rarely the chain breaking, but noise from the chain tensioner or a stretched chain) but, usually the root problem to them going out is from neglect....not getting their oil changes done on time, thus driving around with low oil.

The timing chain broke on my 64 Buick Special V6 in my profile photo. I was driving back to school for my finals. No a good thing, especially away from home. That was a long time ago and I hope timing chain are better now.

So what is the recommended change interval on the V6? All I found in the owners manual is that if you drove in extreme heat (110+) or extreme cold (20 or below), or towing a trailer, then they recommend 60,000 miles, but it said nothing (at least not that I could fine) if you just have normal driving conditions.

105K I believe but I'd do it prior to that along with water pump and associated goodies.

This is what I found on about.com... I assume it would be 90,000 then since this is a 3.5 liter...

It kinda differs from region...but, 7 years or 90,000 is recommended. Basically anytime around 100,000 would be best.

Both Ody and both MDX call for 105K intervals.

Normal driving conditions you can follow the MM, which on the 2008-12 Accord V6 is A4 or B4

May 2009 - Present: 2009 Accord V6 6 MT coupe w/o nav, Alabaster Silver

Dec. 1999 - May 2010: 2000 Prelude 5 MT, sold with 220,000 miles and still running great - gone, but not forgotten

Thats pretty rare that old V6, V8 engines broke timing chain .
Back then GM used plastic covered teeth over a cast hub and over time the plastic got brittle and broke up, jumping a tooth or two .
Also if engine ever overheated same thing would happen much faster . This was done to try and keep the chain and sprocket quiet .

Its been a while and I am not 100% sure the V6 225 had plastic cam sprocket like many other V8 of its time .

Chains in modern OHC are very different now with auto tensioners and many guides to hold chain in place .

Thank you for the information. My DH was wondering because he thought the engine seemed to be much louder, than our previous vehicle, a 2008 Nissan Versa, which also has a chain.

The engine in the 9th Gen Accord will be slightly louder than past generations due to the direct injection system now in use on the K24s of the 9th Gens. Don't think you should be able to even hear the timing chain or any of it's components unless there is a mechanical problem.
