CVT & Poor mileage

2017 Accord Sport SE auto with CVT (1,200 miles)

Is anyone else having issues with their Accord's CVT. Living in the mountains of PA and traveling down a 15 mile mt with a steep grade the car would not coast. Today went from 70 mph down to 30 over the coarse of 3 miles, did not touch the break and the trans said it was in 7 th gear. Was in "D" not "S" and RPM's topped at 4000 RPMS.

I drive very light footed and have also noticed MPG decreasing with every tank
This seems to be getting worse as time goes by.

Any suggestions before calling the service center?

Got a Fuelly page we can look at?

Having a high RPM down the hill is pretty normal. This is called engine braking, and the engine will not inject any fuel when you are engine braking.

Remember that winter blends also decrease gas mileage.

The other guess would be brake drag.

The car will do that, I know in my mom's Sport on steep downgrades it will hold RPMs higher rather than coast. Of course, what sort of MPGs are you getting? Hard to tell what is "low"

I have been keeping my milage since 2013. Here's the URL to my Fuelly page.
I have the I4 with the CVT transmission with the paddle shifters.

Are you using the paddle shifters? It should remain in "D" and not show "7" if you aren't using the paddle shifters.

The paddle shifters will simulate holding a gear and introduce compression braking like a manual transmission.

If your at a high level above sea level and have a lot of hills, your fuel economy will be on the poor side. Is it relative to a previous car you are comparing?

I find my CVT to be quite fuel efficient as long as there are no hills to climb or its not run for short drives, but any car will have issues with that.

Getting 40 mpg is fantastic. Why are you complaining?

That's my question too. If you're not paddle-shifting in D, and the dash shows "7", I'd run that lil' puppy over to the nearest dealership right away for a check-up.

My wife's Accord get about 27-28 in her average, short trip, suburban driving. We see mid 30s on the highway doing, normall, 10 over the limit.

Spoke with dealer and Yes there appears to be an issue - it is suspected to be the CVT. Today it started a high pitch noise when pulling out from a stop. Will update after repairs

Yes...familiarize youself with the concept of engine braking. Honda's current version of Grade Logic approximates that of manual transmissions. Which I find an extremely enjoyable drivability "blast from the past".

Hope they sort the CVT problem out for you.

You never did say if you're paddle shifting in "D" or it's showing "7" all by itself, meaning it might stuck in "S" mode even though you've got it in "D".

Curious minds want to know!

Exactly. In D or S it won't display which "gear" it's in unless the paddle shifters are used. If it's reading 7 then it's trying to mimic a manual transmission with compression braking. That would explain the slow down while going down hill.

My previous CVT Sport would coast down hills no problem unless I intentionally used the paddle shifters to shave speed without riding the brakes. That's the only time I ever used the paddle shifters, and I miss them in my EXL.
