Purchasing 2013-2015 Honda Accord EX/EX-L. What to look for? Common problems?

Hey everyone,

I'm looking to purchase a 2013-2015 Honda Accord EX/EX-L and was wondering if you guys had any input on what I should be looking for when picking out the vehicle. I've contacted about eight different dealerships so I want to make sure when I go and test drive I am making the right choice. Are there any common problem areas I should be on the lookout for?

I heard if I had any questions regarding an Accord that you were the ones to go to.

Thank you,

I recommend you get whatever Graycar tells you to get. Don't ask questions, just get what he says. Keep the right foot planted, bro.

Check for the following.

1. Vibration at idle
2. Judder from CVT (2013/2014 had a TSB repair for this) - when coming to a stop or starting from a stop. Put it in reverse when cold see if RPMs climb.
3. Oil/CVT leak from torque converter seal (where engine meets transmission)
4. If you like the low quality FM audio.

I only have vibration if my car is pointing down a hill while idling. It also does it when the HVAC is set to Auto cause it cycles the compressor. I leave my HVAC set to manual and rarely notice any vibration. Some cars have it worse than others it seems.

My only repair in 30k miles has been the starter motor. There was a TSB on it so I would have to believe it's common.

This list is not to scare you away from a 2013-15 BUT these have been recalled for some things and TSB for other fixes not considered a recall.

Make sure the steering TSB software update recall was performed. 15-055
Make sure the Battery Sensor Module TSB was done. 17-057
Make sure the car was fixed per recall 15-017 Connecting Rod Loosening
Make sure the CVT delay in Gear engagement lower valve body was replaced and the software updated. 15-077
Make sure the Slapping or Clicking From Engine Area at Idle 14-030 was performed.
MIL Comes On with DTC P0087 14-039 High pressure fuel pump

Now, not all these will affect your choice but the recalls for these should be done or get em done if the vin falls under these.
The steering update and BSM covers ALL L4's as well as the V6

My 13 V6 had the BSM and Steering recall. The CVT had a few additional but not many. You might do a search here using tags such as the TSB number.

There's also this sticky : 9th Gen Accord Technical Service Bulletins (TSB) : all trims -- post TSB's only

ALL THE CAR manufacturers have recalls and TSB's so don't let that deter you either.

Good luck !

Thank you,
Get V6 if you can. You can disable VCM as i did by adding plug and play VCM tuner. 280HP is pretty good hp for a family sedan

Don't mean to hi-jack the thread, but my 2014 out of warranty, so would the dealer be able to perform TSB 14-030? My Accord ticks at idle.

Hi Everyone,

Just an update: I took a look at a car today and it seemed to be in fairly good condition but there were a few points that bothered me. As previously described there was a recall for a possible faulty casing for the battery sensor that has not been fixed, and there appeared to be some oil accumulated near the air filter (not sure if it was just cleaner). There was some rust on the axles as well as the exhaust, a few scuffs here and there but everything else seemed fine. I also didn't get a chance to have a cold start as they had claimed they had to bring it from another lot. It's a 2014 EX-L with 49K miles, and a pretty clear service history for 15.5K. Any input?

Not to deal with any headache, i would look for a 2015 that were produced in the middle of the year cycle like Feb-April 2015. Many many problems had been worked out by the 2015 year. But toward the end of 2015 year like July 2015, there is significant cost cutting in metals, paint, interior bits and so forth. Also, remember to pick a car with lanewatch that has high resolution. There are mix of bad and good cameras, and the bad ones really deters you from enjoying the car, at least my case. I guess 2014 cars are just as nice for most people, but i had a bad experience with one and ended up swapping for a 2015.
