Battery replacement - upgrade

As some of our Accord's get older, these wimpy 4-Cylinder batteries seem to be dying at the most inopportune times. Mine died a few weeks earlier right before a final so, I figured it was time to swap it out.

Some of us are still under warranty, so the process should be as painless as taking it to your local dealer, which I did, however I got a smoking deal of an Everstart Maxx Battery with 750 CCA so it was a no brainer it will all be covered in here.

Here is a picture of the wimpy 51R from the factory, it has 425 CCA and lasted approximately 25 months total, half of which in the bitter cold of Upstate NY.

Now it doesn't look that small but here it is compared to a 24F

To upgrade to a group 24 or 35 heres what you will need;

Bolt (235mm) 31513-T2A-A00 $3.45
Battery Box 31521-T2G-A00 $19.26
Battery Cover 31531-T2G-A00 $9.54

Or if you want to put a group 35 in a 4 Cyl just get the hold down plate from the V6 (Hold down plate 31512-T2G-A00 $4.62) and discard the existing Plastic box as the group 35 is about the same height as the 51R and the same width as the 24F. Obviously the Group 24F and 35 batteries weigh more than the 51R they replace, but some people need or want the extra storage capacity.
Me personally, threw out the tray, bent the hold down back and went to work and it fits just as it should.

Now, I also had the dealer replace the battery prior to getting the group 24F. I primarily went ahead with the purchase of the 24F since it has a larger reserve capacity and I got it for $40. The replacement does seem to be of a higher quality imo and it pushes out 500CCA which should be enough for the majority of the people on here. Here are some comparison shots.

Ive noticed less headlight flicker and additionally my car literally turns over on the first crank. Definitely a worthwhile upgrade on the 4 cylinder motor.

That is a deal price for a new battery. Does it feel better with the idle at a stop with the new battery? I have idle vibration and wonder if 24F battery would help remedy the issue.

^^What? What is a deal price??

How would a battery influence idle (unless the mounts are loose)?

I found the battery on CL brand new with recipt. Got lucky. As far as vibration at idle it's been here for 32k no signs of leaving. Thanks CVT!

The 24F upgrade is a must if you are north of the Mason/Dixon line. Honda needs to make a cold weather package for the Northern states.

* 24F battery
* Heated Seats on EX & Sport
* Heated Windshield Wiper Park Area (Like Subaru has)

Just make this region specific like Subaru and Toyota do with some options.

Agreed, which is a lesson for all of us- not all 24Fs have the same Cold Cranking Amps, nor length of full replacement warranties.

My 2005 Accord EX-L 4 cylinder had a Walmart-brand 51R for 5 years, and it started up just fine even at year 4.5 when Chicago was -18 degrees F. I do not have additional electronics or audio- so it was fine for me.

But on the 5th birthday I lost my nerve and went with a 24F from Advance Auto. With online coupon it was just $70, and is the same battery for my 1991 Nissan 240sx- so if I ever needed to swap, I was good.

Got it. So I assume the Everstart Max battery pictured isn't the $40 battery that was purchased.

That makes more sense, given the price difference. I need more juice to power my audio system than the stock battery provides and finish my big three upgrade. My lights dim like 50% when the system hits. Although interestingly enough my LED headlights do not dim - only the halogen bulbs - assuming it because they are drawing more power than the LEDs.

It is the $40 battery pictured, however I got it that cheap on Craigslist and it does intact retail for 100+ at Wally World
