Alpine Type R or Kenwood Sub? (12")

Hey,

I'm not too familiar with any audio equipment so I was wondering if some of you guys could tell me which one of these subs is a better buy.

12" Alpine Type R Subwoofer
or
12" Kenwood Subwoofer

I usually listen to rap/hip-hop -- anything with a good beat. lol

The Alpine is a dual-voice-coil and the Kenwood is a single-voice-coil -- can anyone tell me what that means? lol

I want one where you can feel a good bump, but where it's NOT rattling your car nor are people hearing me drive up from a mile away! haha

Both have great reviews and I'm gettin a good deal on either one of these, so I would appreciate any advice/input yall may have.

Thanks!

between the 2, I would say price would probably be the determining factor. The Alpine might be easier to find an amp for since it's a DVC and can be wired to a lower impedance.

I'd basically go to someplace where you can hear them, decide which sounds best to you. Numbers and stats don't mean as much as the grade you give them with your own ears.

FYI, for most speakers, you want to color match them, i.e., you want to get all Kenwoods all from the same line; you don't want to mix and match. However, this doesn't apply to subs - that's the one place where you can get whatever you want, whatever sounds best to you.

the kenwood would be much cheaper than the alpine.

however the type R sounds very good. pricey, but it can get loud and clean.

I have 2 Alpine Type R 10" subs in a custom made ported box...

It sounds rediculous (they are excelent quality and sound)

A buddy of mine had 2 12" rockford p2's and i beat him in a bass off easily

They work for all types of music too

Alpine is the ish

Alpine type r vs which kenwood sub? If you are talking about best buy stuff, get the type r. I had a single 10" type r in my last car (jeep wrangler) and it was great. I have 2 of them waiting to go into my 7g now Unless the kenwood sub is an excelon, it will not even compare to the type r. The type r's play very deep and accurate compared to other subs of the same size. They are not the best sub out there, but very good for the money.

Here's the model name/tag for the Kenwood sub: KFC-W3012

One of my friends has an Alpine Type R in his car and when he turned it up it ROCKED THE CAR! It sounded good, but definitely NOT what I want! lol I want a good sounding bass, but I don't want it shaking everything in my car!! Do all 12" basses do this?! Maybe I should go down to a 10" bass or something...

He usually has his set at -6 db but when he bumped it up to 0 db and beyond...wow... my body was shakin in his car! lol

I want a bass that hits sharp on each beat, but don't want it causing an earthquake within the car! Is there another set-up I should be looking for instead of a sub?

Some of it depends on the kind of enclosure you're using, Sealed vs Ported.

How is a sealed enclosure different from a ported one? As in, what's the sound difference suppose to be like?

I have a type r in a sealed pre-made sub zero box powered by an alpine MRP1000 amp. And it hits clean and hard(thats what she said). First make sure the amp you get will give the sub the watts that it needs to run. These subs have a 500 watt RMS (what is needed for normal operation) with a peak wattage of 1500 watts. You can tweak the settings on the amp as well as your deck to get the effect you are going for. But be warned, once you upgrade your lows it will only be a matter of time before you think the mid and highs need to be replaced too.

sealed has a tighter sound and a little more low end, ported will have a bit more volume (3 dB or so) around the port freq.

yea, I'm gettin a JL 10W3-4 (300 watts RMS) and a Infinity Kappa One amp (800 watts RMS at 2 ohms and 500 watts RMS at 4 ohms). I think the Kappa One is an over kill for the 10W3, but I'm getting it brand new for less then half retail price!! Then as for the mids and highs you mentioned, I think Focal 165A1's should cover that, right?

i'm thinkin about gettin a custom ported box made so that it's tuned correctly, can you tune a sealed box?
