Tire size alternate

Hi all,
The slow process of buying winter tires for my new Accord has begun. I also have a 2011 Sonata which I run General Altimax Arctics on and would like to get the same tire because the price and performance is right for me. Unfortunately, the Generals don't come in the EX-L size (225/50/17) and my shop is out of the LX 16 inch tire size as well (215/60/16).

Now Tire rack says that I can run the same size on my Accord as I do on my Sonata (as an alternate) 215/55/17 and I can find those ones in stock. Can anyone see a major issue with this size? Speedo may be off a bit but I think it is ok on new steel rims.

Thanks for the help!!

You should be fine with alternate size as long as Tire Rack recommends it. I just went with a 255/40/18 on my stock rims as this was listed as an alternate size from Discount Tires. It was explained to me that the recommended alternate sizes fall within 3% of the acceptable variance in regards to speedo calibration for Honda.

Cool thanks! I am most concerned with the brakes fitting with the rims.

Caliper & rotor clearance on an 11 LX should be fine with 16 wheels. I tested OEM alloy 16x6.5" LX-P wheels on my EXL V6 sedan, and they work just fine.

You should be good to go as well with with the 215/55/17's on your OE 17" wheels...

I have 215/55/17 tires on my 2011 Accord LX sedan. No problems with this tire size.

Your stock 225/50/17 tire diameter is 25.86 inches. The 215/55/17 tire diameter is 26.31 inches. Assuming your speedometer is accurate with your stock tires; at 70 mph, with the new 215/55/17 tires you would actually be going 71.22 mph.

The original equipment tires on my 2011 LX were 215/60/16 (tire diameter 26.16 inches). I checked the accuracy of the car's speedometer with this tire size and found it to be accurate. 70 mph on speedometer equaled 70 mph on GPS. With the new 215/55/17 tires, speedometer is off a little bit. With car's speedometer at 70 mph, actual speed is 70.41.

I may be wrong, but I bet the Accord LX and Accord EX have the same speedometer calibration. If Iím right, then your speed would be off 0.41 mph at 70 mph with 215/55/17 tires.
