So im planning on getting GY TT's soon and i was wondering what would be the difference between 205's and 215's.

215 is bigger. 10 mm of section width and a slight difference in the overall height depending if you're talking 40/45/50/55 ??

If the aspect ratio and diameter are the same for both tires, then the only difference is that the 215 are wider.

EDIT: Actually, not quite true... if the aspect ratio is the same, the wider tire will have a slightly HIGHER profile.

im not really sure about that, caus i have a honda pilot, and its rated standard size was 235. and i went with 245's and the ride was definetly higher, and the tires were wider. if i went with 215's would they make my stock rims loook small?

Rim Width
The width between the flanges of the wheel (the part the bead of the tire touches)

Section Width
The linear distance between the outside of the sidewalls of an inflated tire without any load on it (this does not include any sidewall decorations)

Section Height
This is also known as the Aspect Ratio. This is figured as a percentage of the section width. A tire size of 205/60R15 would have a section width of 205 millimeters and a section height of 60 percent of 205 millimeters.

If you were to go with 215, you would need 215/55/16 but you would still be slightly lower. Use this link to see the comparison:

Neither statements are true.

Ex.

205/45R17 & 215/45R17

The 205-series is 10mm narrower in width and ~10mm shorter in height (overall diameter).

45-profile indicates that the height of the side-wall of the tire is 45% of the width.

205 -> width of tire in mm
45 -> profile of tire (sidewall height), thus 205mm x .45 = 92.25mm

215 -> width of tire in mm
45 -> profile of tire (sidewall height), thus 215mm x .45 = 96.75mm

Doh!

Yes, you're right... I had it backwards. The aspect ratio is the height of the sidewall as a percentage of the tire's width.

I guess that's what happens when you try to do the math in your head.

Thanks for the correction.

It's all good, my friend... I'm tend to bat .500'ish too when I try to figure out wheel-offsets, tire-size calculations, gear-ratios, spring-rates, etc' in my head!

Then I bust out the pencil & scrap-paper, lolz!

Someone needs to incorporate all those aforementioned calculations and other relevant ones onto a single-website. . .

To All:

Osiris_x11 is DEAD ON correct! I always admire/respect a SMART kid who is truly handy with NUMBERS!

When selecting the physical diminsions of a tire, people often get tangled up with nomenclature. Let's be very CLEAR here, in really simple English:

There is the total DIAMETER of the tire, the HEIGHT of the sidewall, and the WIDTH of the contact patch (where rubber meets the road). That's IT.

Abiding concerns are body/wheelwell clearance and suspension componentry clearance.

One "kicker" I shall add is that I check the manufacturers' charts to show me the total OUTSIDE diameter of one particular tire versus another. I don't care to be changing out speedometer drive gears...and likely neither do you.

Although not specifically Honda-related, the following web page provides sample calculations for estimating the correct size of tire to maintain odometer accuracy:

The calculations also take into account the rolling diameter of the tire.
