Measuring Tire tread depth

VERY good information. I was only aware of using the quarter.

I read that article as well (I get their newsletter) - but being the tire addict I am, I bought a gauge like they show in the pictures a few years ago - and I never let the tires get lower than 6/32" around here - they get replaced at that level....

....gee, I'm at 6/32 (by tread depth gauge)...........should I start to worry?

Are there weather concerns? Heavy loads at high speeds on wet pavement?

What am I missing here?

I have a tire tread depth gauge. Quite a worthy investment.

Where did you get the depth gauges? Yes I googled and found a zillion, I want to know if you found them locally at an auto parts store for instance.

I bought mine locally at a store. I don't recall where I bought it, I've had it for a few years now. It may have been at Target or Wal-mart, but it might have been at Kragen or a similar auto parts store.

For me, living in the Northeast, I worry about edge-of-season weather which can include slippery conditions, so I'm different than California might be. Tire Rack says 4/32 as the bare minimum. But if you go to their web site and go to this link it has a full explaination about the reduction in stopping grip based on tread depth, and the video there is quite eye-opening!!!!!!
