1996 Timing belt costs?

What does the typical complete timing belt job cost for a 1996 4cyl lx? I bought the car a few months ago it has 138K and the first job was done at 66K. Mechanic I talked to says it should all be done very soon.

Timing belt
tensioners
water pump
seals
Balance shaft belt?
flush coolant
valve cover gasket

My dealer charges $699.99 to replace the water pump, cam and crank seals, drive belts, timing belt and coolant. They also adjust the timing and idle speed.

I paid nearly $1100.00 for what I consider to be a complete overhaul for my 90k mile service.

All the above plus...

Transmission Fluid
Power Steering Fluid
Brake Fluid
Belt Tensioners/Balancers
Valve Cover Gasket Set
Plug Tube Seals
Spark Plugs
Ignition Wires
Distributor Cap and Rotor
Valve Adjustment
Air Filter
Inspection of the entire car
Cleaning of the throttle body

There may have been a few more items on that list, my book is in the car...

Thanks,

This mechanic said about $1000 for

Timing belt
tensioners
water pump
seals
Balance shaft belt?
flush coolant
valve cover gasket

I think I will investigate a little more.

$1000 for the job sounds high especailly if it's not a dealership. An indie mechanic should charge around $500 depending on your location. I just did the timing belt on my 03 V6 for $600 at my mechanic with all OEM parts. Drive belts, thermostat, and adjustments were made as well for that price.

If you can find a good mechanic that you can trust, go that route. My guy let me hang in the shop the whole time while mine was been done. I hate leaving my ride while it's been worked on.

Unless you live in southern California that amount is insane!

A dealer probably doesn't even charge that much.

Yes it is an automatic. That tank was 100% freeway with premium unleaded fuel. I will not make any promises or claims that the higher octane will make a difference, I simply use it because I can and I have found for the way I drive it increases my MPG on the highway.

26mpg mixed sounds great in all honesty. I get about 20 on my city tanks, if that.

The car is rated 23 city, 30 highway.

I thought $1000 seemed high. I can get my TDi done for $750 with everything. People usually rip on them for the high timing belt job costs.

I will have try a all highway trip sometime. 26 mpg just seems bad when I am used to 50+ with the TDi. Worst tank ever was 47 on winter fuel with snow tires.

Mine was a little less than $900 the dealership. I plan on going to a shop like Midas and have them use a OEM belt and hopefully save $200-300 that I can use towards a brake job.

Please don't go to Midas!!!

Find a good independent mechanic if your dealer is too much. Also, call around. I just had my timing belt, drive belts, water pump and coolant changed for $493.00 at a Honda dealer on my 99 Accord.

I know the dealer ship in northern California does it for $500-600. $1100 for the timing belt + 90k service is way overpriced. They usually only charge 800 for it.

I just took my 92 Accord in yesterday to do a major service and to check a oil leak.

Turns out the oil leak was bad one and I needed a new timing belt and tones of seals replaced, oil pan gasket replaced.

There was no record of the timing belt change and he showed me the old belt and I was lucky because it was ready to go big time.

Price was $797 canadian

mmm. looking at these posts makes me want to call my local honda dealership and ask. I believe my mechanic told me it would be around $700 for Timing belt + water pump. Maybe it depends on were you live.
IF thats the case then Im probably gonna be quoted higher than my mechanic.
well, I'll just have to find out tomorrow.

I had mine done for about $700 in FL. at a local shop. Thats with a little discount. Looking back, I should have at least called the dealer to see how much they would charge. I did get a 1 yr warr though...

You can cut down costs by buying the parts yourself, thats whut i did. and they're genuine honda parts too. bought them at hondapartsunlimited, which is the cheapest place i could find online and of course the dealership.
