Question Brake Light On During Colder Weather Only

My 2001 V-6 Accord Sedan with 65K on it started this last winter. The brake warning light on the dash comes on of a morning until driving a few miles then goes off and seems to stay off until the next morning . Then this summer it was off, never coming on again until a couple of mornings ago when the temps dropped down around mid 40's and there it is again. I have checked the brake fluid level in the master cyc, replaced the brake fluid in the master cyl but nothing changes. Summer the light stays off, fall, winter, spring it comes on. I have checked the parking brake lever, pulling it on/off & making sure this was not the problem.

Anyone experience this problem I would like to hear from you ....

Thanks Doug

I have experienced this exact thing but it only happened in very cold temperatures (0 degrees or below). Same experience though; once I was driving and the car and it started to warm up, the light went off. I never could find out why it was happening. The only thing that I can tie into the Brake light being on is the alternator. When my alternator went out a couple months ago the Brake Light was on as well as a crap load of other dash lights. That is the only other time that the brake light on the dash has come on.

Good luck!

You need to replace the float in the brake reservoir.

I tend to agree its probably the float switch, but if you want to test it for sure, unplug the wire connector going to the cap and leave it disconnected. The light should stay off since the float circuit will never be closed.

I had the same problem this morning. Brake warning light goes on, and then goes away after driving a couple of miles. I checked the brake system reservoir and it seemed to be full, but I topped it off a little bit. Why would it happen just in cold weather? And how do you replace the float switch that people are referencing?

I found this in another forum:

the problem is the brake fluid filter.

the filter retains pressure inside it since it creates such a good seal. honda has an updated filter with notches cut into the side of it to equalize pressure faster. you can modify your current filter to look like the updated filter to fix it. or a new replacement filter from honda is about $10 or so.

be sure to top off your brake fluid level if it's low(use Dot 3 fluid)

there is a tsb on it. all filters that sink into the master cylinder are affected. it usually turns off after the pressure equalizes after you drive off and are about 15 minutes into the drive or so.

what happens is the filter isn't allowing the cap to vent properly. this causes the fluid level in the filter to change. and since the float is inside the filter the warning light illuminates.
