Overfilled Coolant

Hey, I just want to make sure I'm not damaging my engine or radiator system here. I checked all my fluids in my 4cyl today, and noticed that the coolant was WAY above the max line, half way between the max line and the top of the tank. This was when the engine is cold, the car hasn't been run for several days. Is this bad? I read somewhere that excess coolant just escapes through a pressure valve when hot, is this the case here? I don't want to blow any hoses or gaskets.

You wont hurt anything with the coolant above the max line. Somebody probably just overfilled it, but keep an eye on the level for a week or two, if it keeps getting fuller then you may have a head gasket problem pushing coolant out of the engine into the tank. That would also result in overheating the engine, so watch your temp gage too.

Thanks, I figured if it was too full the excess would just get pushed out of that pressure valve that's on most cooling systems. My temperature has been normal as far as I can tell (about half way between C and H on a hot day with A/C and everything) so I think it's fine, but I'll keep an eye on it. It's probably just something I didn't notice in the past. Also, how often should I flush the coolant from the tank? How long does that antifreeze last? (Just want to check since winter is coming and I'd hate to end up with a cracked block)

The previous generation antifreeze can go for 30K miles.
The new gen antifreeze is long lifed, probably up to 100K miles but I'd replace it at 60K miles.

You need to flush the coolant from the whole system - radiator, engine, heater, not just the reservoir tank. Generally draining from the radiator and refilling with new coolant is an adequate flush. That will require about 1 gallon of new coolant to refill. Honda started using the long life (100k) blue coolant in 2000 I think. I would recommend you stick with that.
Coolant doesnt lose its anti-freeze properties, it loses its corrosion protection properties over time, so thats why it needs to be flushed.
