Post How much did you pay for 98-02 Accord timing belt service?

Since we get people asking for prices, if it's worth it, or how long they can put it off for, I would like to get a few responses to how much y'all paid for a timing belt service.

I think a lot of people believe the timing belt is always going to cost them an astronomical amount, or they have to get it done at a dealership, if they're told they should have it done that the car is not worth the cost, or that reaching the timing belt service interval/mileage means the car will "die" soon (none of those are true). So I think having a few examples from different members, will give people a better idea of what to expect. Trust me, putting a few hundred dollars down to keep your car in good shape, is easier and cheaper than spending a lot more on a new car. Please don't junk your car or refuse to get it serviced because of the cost. Take care of your car and it will take care of you. If you don't, when that belt snaps it can destroy your car's engine components. Don't let that happen to you; it is very preventable.

Here's a video of what happened to an Acura engine after the timing belt broke (bent valves):

The service includes replacement of the timing belt, belt tensioner and water pump. You should have this done every 7 years or 105,000 miles, whichever comes first. That is the recommended interval for 1998-2002 Accords that are driven under normal and severe driving conditions. You cannot diagnose the condition of the timing belt by visual inspection alone.



If you can, please include the amount you paid to have the timing belt service performed on your 6th gen. Also include your state/country, the mileage of the car and when it was done. location is useful, because prices can vary greatly by location.

I had the service done on my 1999 2.3 L Accord sedan at 113,000 miles on 12/28/2015 (a month after I purchased it). I paid about $580 and it was done by an independent auto shop Pennsylvania, US.

I purchased mine in 2007 with 108k miles on the clock. I was unaware of the timing belt and it's condition at the time I purchased it, and had the belt replaced in 2008 at 145k miles at a Firestone shop for $700 IIRC. I had it done simply because I did not know about the history of the car and I would have rather spent $700 on a new belt than who knows what on getting the engine repaired.

Later on, I forget what it was exactly, the timing belt was replaced again in 2012 with 210k miles due to water pump o-ring failure and it cost me the $175 in parts and my dad did the labor.

More recently, I did replaced the timing belt at 285k about this time last year, again because of water pump o-ring failure. Again, it cost me about $175 in parts from Rock Auto and this time around, I did the work myself. The belt itself looked good and seemed like it could have gone easily for another 30k miles.

You should include the cost of the silent shaft (counter balance shaft) oil seal as well, as many of those have failed and dumped all of the oil out of the Engine.

There is a kit to add a retainer so the new seal will not pop out that you should add as well. The parts are about $10 but well worth it.

Not on my V6. Cost will depend on the kit -- OEM, Ainsin, I have Continental. And what the hourly rate or package rate for the labor. I paid around $800 at a good indy. You can shop the job.

How about serpentine/drive belt replacement? Is that recommended? That is what service dept. said.

Cost me right around $500 OTD miles. My indy did the work but I supplied him with the Aisin kit, OEM seals (front crank, cam, balancer & oil pump), balancer seal retainer kit (TSB fix from Honda years ago) and coolant.

I've posted this before but my indy and I are pretty sure this was the first time the T-belt was ever done on this car. My dad had this car before me and he supposedly had the belt done years ago at a chain shop. But, the way these parts looked, it was obvious they were all factory and this chain shop just ripped my Dad off by not doing the work.

It's a good idea to do valve adjustment, replace valve cover gaskets, spark plugs, serpentine belt, and PS belt at the same time. These extras add cost to the timing belt job, of course.

Recently got this done for $900 from the local Honda dealership - which is about the going rate for Honda shops here in the Seattle area.

I shopped around, but wasn't willing to let a non-Honda shop do it 'cause I'm a freak about big-ticket, potentially important Honda work being done by non-Honda people.

This is my second timing belt, belt tensioner and water pump replacement - the first at 70K, 7 year mark, most recently at the 140K, 17 year mark in preparation to sell it with confidence to the next owner - even though I know it cost about what the car is worth.

The most expensive part of the job is the labor. V6, i4,model year, or the parts cost don't matter that much.

I paid $400 to hire a Honda dealership mechanic to do the job last year. The parts cost me $200. So, it's about $600 total. The Honda dealer quoted near $1500 (after tax), and ind. shops quoted near $1000 (after tax etc.) in Chicago area.

That's when I first purchased the car. I had the urgency of getting it done as soon as possible.
Now that I don't have urgent needs for timing belt service, I feel that I can DIY. It's probably easier than dealing with rusty suspension/exhaust repairs.
