what should the correct RPM be at idling speed?

I have a 1999 Accord with the 4 cylinder VTEC engine. I am wondering what should the correct RPM at when the car is idling at a traffic stop? The needle on the tachometer shows it is just below the 3/4 of 1000 RPM, is that correct? Thanks for all your replies.

That probably the correct idle speed. It depends on the engine temp and what all accessories are on. If the AC or headlights are on its a little higher, if there is minimal electrical load its a little lower, whaterver the ECM decides.

750 is spec idle speed.

It should always idle near that speed with brief fluctuations as load increases or decreases.

Cold start can be as high as 1800 rpm on a 4 cylinder, dropping as the engine warms.

Whoa, I need to adjust mine then. It idles pretty low (around 500 rpm's) at normal operating temp. Any adverse complications with having an idle slightly low as mine? I was having a minor issue with headlights and A/C but I replaced the old battery and that fixed that.

I noticed a TSB on idle speed and rough takeoff in the 6th gen auto 4 bangers, which was fixed by adjusting a screw. Is this easy to do by myself?

Before adjusting anything, make sure the throttle body bore and plate are clean.

I tend not to like messing with the IAC, but in your case you might have to.

The small port just to the outside of the plate is the feed passage for air for the IAC. Spray carb cleaner in there, liberally, and then if you have compressed air, immediately blow air through that port. You don't want the gunk collecting in there, it will make the valve stick, causing other issues.

Just cleaning any gunk in there may make the idle come up to normal.

This is on the '99 in your sig, correct?

Yes the '99. I'll look at it this weekend and spray some carb cleaner and air through there, hopefully that will fix the surge forward from a stop. Thanks Fred
