Copy key

I want to get copies of my original key, but when I go to a key copying place, the guy said that there was a chip in here. So can I get copies of my key? If so, how do I do it, and how much?

Does that one have an immobilizer in it?

That is cheap, very cheap. Mine was around 100 because it has the remote on the key. But my buddy drives an 02 altima, and to get a key at the dealer ran him around 100 also....

Which dealer was it?

I got it at Indy Honda. I went in there handed them my one master key they cut a new key then stuck both keys in a machine and it copied the info from my master key to the newly cut key. I know other cars have to have a service tech actually program the key to the car so that's probably why other keys are more expensive.

I heard that when the service tech has to "program" the key for a nominal fee that the programing procedure is nothing more than them putting the key in the ignition, turning it to the "run" position a number of times and the key programs itself. Is this true or is there more to it?

My understanding was that they had to actually hook a machine up to your car and program but I don't really know I could be wrong. You know garages doesn't matter if they just turn a key a couple times or hook a machine up or actually wrench on something they charge like $80 an hour minimum 1 hour to do anything.

My dealer retails a "T5" replacement for around $20, out the door. Be sure to bring proof of ownership and an original key to the car. Reason: My dealer is NOT in the business of assisting possible car thieves. They call it their "Anti-Rip Off" policy.

The local dealership charged me $56.00 total for the blank, cutting and programming. Some local locksmiths wanted as much as $230.00.

Could you please explain what a T5 key is, and the difference (if any) between that and a regular key? I went to my dealer and asked about getting one since it only came with one and I locked the key in it (while running) once already. Luckily my father knows how to work a slim jim.

Anyways...The service tech quoted me $150 for a key unprogrammed, I laughed and walked away. All I can think is that he must've thought I was talking about a newer, laser cut, key. But I had the key in my hand, holding it out while talking to him.

I really want a new key though, and I would prefer it to be one that would actually enable me to drive it. Not just open the door, though that would be better than where I stand now.

To All:

A "T5" is a duplicate/replacement key sold ONLY by authorized Honda dealers. It has a microchip, necessary to correctly activate and control the "Immobilizer Anti-Theft System" installed on every Honda vehicle since (circa) 1998. The "T5" blank is cut on their machine, using an original (or other "T5") key for a particular car. The machine also programs special codes into the microchip of a "T5" blank key.

You can go to Wal*Mart, the parts store, or a locksmith, or wherever else you like, to have another key cut. It will unlock the doors, the glovebox, the interior locks, and the trunk. However, it will NOT start the car. ONLY a Honda dealer's key machine can PROGRAM a "T5" blank, using HMC's proprietary system. This is to PROTECT the rightful owner of the vehicle.

Ok, thanks. A T5 is what is needed to start the car and costs ~$25 from non-thieving service techs. I figured I could goto walmart and get one to open the door, thats why I laughed when he told me $150.

Hey guys thanks I just copied my key yesterday. It was in a mall, and it was one of those portable locksmiths. Charged me 50 bucks, but I could start my car with both keys
