Cost of clutch replacement

Folks,

I was curious as to how much a clutch replacement cost for the 1998-02 Accord? The could not really tell me at the dealer but guessed it was about $2000 or so. Does this sound correct?

Have any of you folks with Manual transmission 6th Gen Accords replaced your clutch? How much does the service cost?

Clutch disc, pressure plate, release bearing, and related parts are not really that expensive. I just looked up the prices at Majestic Honda. You can do the same and punch it into your calculator. Be sure to replace the transaxle seals, since you are already "there." Add whatever the axles need, especially the outboard CV boots.

The labor cost is the "kicker." Basic hand tools, a floor jack, support stands, and three (3) of your best buddies can easily handle it. Kick in four (4) cases of good beer, along with plenty of Pizza, and you're DONE!

I called my dealer and an import shop about it when I was looking into a MT 6thGen about a year ago. They estimated $900-$1,000.

Your dealer's $2K "guess" sounds like a "business is good, we're not interested in your clutch job" response.

I bought an exedy clutch kit (pressure plate, flywheel, clutch disc, throw out bearing) off ebay for $200 shipped. My mechanic only charges $70 an hour (dealerships gets $90) and it took 5 hours. So $550 all said and done. My car had 170k on it and the flywheel was fine, but I wouldn't have known that until it was taken apart. You can get an OEM clutch kit ( a few less parts that I got) for around $150.

Sodaks2s gives the "numbers" I had in mind. Naturally depending on what parts you need, and what brand(s) you select, then factor in about four-to-five hours of labor, at "whatever" rate you can obtain. I am thinking in the $500-to-$600 range, total bill.

I've heard a lot of positive feedback about Exedy clutch components. I have a young (computer geek/Acura freak) colleague who drag races his 2003 Acura RSX "Type S." He wiped out the gearbox, but the Exedy clutch never failed him, in over two (2) years of severe use. (Or should I say ABUSE?)

I do not know who all furnishes Honda OEM clutch parts. But they are damn FINE quality, in my book. An OEM Honda clutch, given reasonable treatment, will usually last between 50,000 and 100,000 miles. (This, of course, depends on what kind of driving you do.) I replaced the clutch in my trusty '86 at 188,000 miles...with lining material to spare on the clutch disc. For what I can guess, it might have gone another 5,000+ miles.

I was going to go with OEM originally, but my pocket book got the better of me on deciding on parts. I, too, heard good things about Exedy, and that is why I chose them.

You know me. While I typically advocate strict use of OEM Honda components, there ARE times when I find it convenient/necessary to make exceptions to my own rules.

There are certain things/times where you don't want to "cheap out." Yanking and reinstalling a tranny, to replace a clutch unit, is a real PITA. And using cheap-grade parts is a sure-fire way to guarantee that you will end up doing it more times than you care to.

Changing a (brake) light bulb? No biggy. Changing a clutch? Inspect every part, thoroughly, prior to installation. RULE: "When in doubt, throw it out!" And using the utmost care and precision, install each part to perfection. You will Thank Yourself, endlessly, in the short/long run.

Again, the Exedy unit will likely work out just fine for you. While I personally would not use it in my trusty '86, I DO know several individuals who have enjoyed great success with Exedy clutch components. (NO, this is NOT an Internet commercial for Exedy products, either!)

Be sure to correctly TORQUE the pressure plate bolts, in the (Honda-designated) "criss-cross" pattern. I'm thinking about 19 (nineteen) foot-pounds. (20 (twenty) lbs./ft. is okay, in the case you don't own/have access to a "micro" wrench.) Failure to correctly torque the bolts can cause the pressure plate to warp, after "thermal cycling." The likely result will be "line chatter" and premature wearout of the clutch disc.

I ALSO strongly suggest you remove the flywheel and replace the "big end" crank seal. It should run you about (an estimated) $8-$10. If the flywheel (itself) is nasty-looking (from disc rivit damage), don't bother having it resurfaced. Most machine shops don't know how, or care, to properly recondition a "countersunk" flywheel. Just toss it and buy a NEW one. Using a crappy flywheel with new clutch parts? You are WASTING a lot of time, labor, and MONEY.

Buddy got his replaced for $600, but I think it was the earlier generation of accord.

4 to 5 hours? Try 8 hours in gen 6 chassis for auto or manual trans R & R. That's with a car that only requires the forward part of the subframe to come out as it's two piece.

The last gen 6 clutch I did was around $1200. More labor than anything else.

A gen 7, esp V6 would come to about 2 grand with the full subframe removal and the parts that are required.

2 grand, that is more than I expected. I thought 1200-1500 was the ballpark figure. Just curious, how much is a 7th Gen Auto Tranny repair cost? The V6.

An auto trans replacement in a gen 7, figure the 8-10 hours labor, then depending on where the unit comes from $2800-$3500. And in the case of Honda units, you do get what you pay for.

The cost of the clutch, provided it didn't need a flywheel, could come a bit lower. The last time I looked $1800 before tax was a pretty close amount.

Here's list prices if you were paying a shop to do the clutch w/flywheel

FLY 635.55
CLU 320.58 (includes pressure plate and disc)
Pilot bearing 37.85
release bearing 45.15

I always recommend these as well: release fork and pivot

Fork 27.85
Pivot 10.03

Parts at retail: 1077.01
10 hours if $100/hr 1000.00

If the flywheel is good, no excessive cracks, hot spots, or play between the halves, take off that 635.00. That still leaves you at near 1500 before taxes, fluids as the trans needs draining before removal and anything else that might come up with an job like that on a higher mileage car.
