2008 Honda Accord Coupe EXL-V6 MPG

Hi guys, I am new to this forum. I bought a used 2008 Honda Acoord Coupe EXL-V6 about a year and a half ago. It has only 10,000 miles on it when I bought it.Right now my car is at 20,000 miles, my problem with this car is MPG. I drive 50% local and 50% highway roughly, but i only average about 16-17 mpg. I fill up 10 gallons at a time and i get 160-175 miles out of it. This car suppose to be 19 city and 28 hwy estimated mpg. I went on this trip that about 140 miles round trip thats all highway and i still wont get any better mileage out of that time. I was wondering if something is wrong with my car to be averaging low mpg. Any ideas or suggestions are welcome.

Thank You guys

Lwin

How are you arriving at this number? How are you calculating you MPGs?

I tested out couple times like this. I fill up my car to full then i drive until the low gas light comes on then i go back and fill it up to full. Then i divde the total miles by the total gallons that i just filled up to full.

Do you drive fast? Going 80mph on the highway you definitely won't get "highway" mileage.

No I dont drive fast like that if im on the highway im going about 60-65 depending on the traffice but i never go faster than 70. I know how i drive effect the mileage but the way i drive it shouldnt effect that much. I drove a 1992 lexus ls-400 before this car. it was V8 engine and i average about the same MPG with this car.

You're contradicting yourself. First you say you put in 10 gallons at a time, then you say you drive to empty and fill it up. Which is it?

I filled it up to full when i did the tests ofcourse. For normal fill up i dont fill it up full, only 10 at a time. Full tank is way too much money to spend on gas at 1 time for me. its like $75-80. Tank holds 18 gallons.

Well, if you're really only getting that mileage, something is wrong with the car. Have it checked out. Injector, O2 sensor(s), MAF sensor, something.

Hey there, I got the same car as you

Mine has Navi so it has an average mpg display. I came from a 4 cylinder and had to get used to the V6 gas guzzling. But we get more power...so we have to sacrifice something. My avg. MPG ranges from 22-24mpg. I'm at 22.5 now. I do about 60%-65% highway...I have an aftermarket exhaust.

If you're car isn't modded like mine...I would suggest you take it to a dealer, my local one does like a free multi-point inspection (search for deals/coupons on your local dealer site) and see if there is an actual issue. If it is modded...I can only hear them blame everything on the mods...but still you can at least find out if there is a problem.

You should do it soon...I think the power train warranty still good (if this counts under that).

Wait are we talking about a v6 auto or a 6-6??
I've got an 08 ex-l 6-6 and I'm averaging 16mpg, half city half highway. I haul though so I expect to get crappy gas mileage. Also, the autos have something that helps with fuel economy and the manuals don't (not exactly sure what, I'm not a rocket scientist)
Just sayin...

Word has it any time you're over 2k rpm, you're burning excess fuel.

Dunno if this will swing anyone either way but..... I've got a 09 v6 sedan and when the gas gauge got to about half, 40 bucks didnt even bring it back to a full tank. The gas gauge on anyones vehicle isnt precise i dont think. usually get about 100 miles before the gauge even dips, then it drops like crazy.

My question is How do you REALLY know that you filling up at 10 gallons??? I know I can't but I fill up at half tank all time and I know my MPG calculations is consistent from fill up to fill up.

If I was you fill up the tank and drive normal NO WOT, NO stop light racing. Repeat the step one or two more time and you will get your answer.

Also have you done any maintenance? what about tires? what air pressure, and others are a factor add up to your MPG

Sounds like there is a problem, so you might want a dealership to check it out.

I have the 6MT with the V6, and I'm able to routinely average 24-29 MPG depending on how much highway driving I'm doing.

You can hypermile much more easily with a manual of course, but even the automatic should be doing better than what you are describing.

You should be keeping your gas tank full -- no way for you to get accurate numbers otherwise. If you can afford the car you can afford to fill the tank.
