check coolant reservoir tank when engine is cold or hot??

hi, what do you guys think? my car runs perfectly...i'm just curious what will be proper way to check the coolant level at the plastic jug?

1. coolant level at reserve should be at MAX, when engine is cold? (when engine is hot, the coolant level increase to the space between cap and MAX) ?

2. coolant level at reserve should be at MIN, when engine is cold?? (when engine is hot, the coolant level increast to MAX)

3. doesn't matter when engine is cold or hot, whenever checking it should between MAX and MIN??

if i take the car to the dealership for routine maintenance / oil change.... the coolant is always at MAX ( because you drive to there, the engine's hot) ; sometime at the morning i find the coolant leve is about 1 inch below MAX; the manual doesn't specify check it when engine is hot or cold....

please tell how you treat this issue.....thanks a lot!!!

I'm not exactly sure, but mine is at (if not just below) the MIN line. I've checked it while cold and hot, and it's the same. The manual says to add coolant if it's below minimum. But, I've read several threads (such as this one) on this forum where people reported the same and that when they took it in to their dealership, they were told not to add more

I check cold - if it is really hot the idea is the radiator spits some back into the tank. When it cools it sux's it back into the radiator.

Have you ever seen a big engined muscle car puking it's radiator into a parking lot after a burnout or fast rev? The coolant expands and has to exit the radiator and pukes out the tube.

maybe

some other car brand has marking for HOT and COLD for checking coolant reservior level.......honda has MAX and MIN ....i found it vary when the engine is cold or hot......that's why i'm confused...

i think it's better add keep the level as high as possible, so in the event of leaking it takes longer to done damage....
