Open the hood and spray lysol disinfecting spray into the cowl with the car running and a/c blowing on fresh air. Then change your a/c pollen filter and spray some in there with the air on recirculate.

I remember reading somewhere on here it is your evaporator. Buy a can of evaporator cleaner and spray up the ac hose where it leaks out of the bottom of your car. Or spray directly through the air vents, but the smell will come back quicker. Should be done 2x a year. I am waiting to do mine when it gets warm.

Yes, here is the thread that you probably read. "Stop the stank before it starts":

Stop the stank before it starts.

I was looking for this thread last week because I am experiencing the stank now that the weather is getting warm. I plan on ordering a can of 1Z einszett Klima-Cleaner and shooting it up the evaporator drain hose per the suggestions. I am not sure where the hose outlet is on the 8th gen sedan, but there is a picture in the above thread that shows the hose traveling behind the passenger side carpeting, so I will try and trace it to where it exits underneath the car, or turn on the air conditioner and look for water droplets as others have done. If I had a camera I would take a picture.

Wow, thanks for posting this... I was about to post a similar thread myself. I drive a 2010 LX sedan and my ventilation system smells like mildew or a damp sock after I turn on the A/C. The odor usually goes away after about ten minutes, but still - what a stupid design flaw!

So I applied 1Z Einszett Klima-Cleaner last week (1/2 of the can directly up the condenser drain hole and 1/2 a can down the center vent). I jacked up one side of the car a little so the can would be upright, had to feel for the drain hole because you can't see it, and was able to insert the tube all the way up into the condenser (A car lift would have been nice, but thats life). Both methods successfully traveled directly into the condenser because another person was watching the fluid come out of the drain. A really disgusting gray mix was coming out. I don't know how long it will last but so far the stank is gone.

I must say that in the past the odor was related to the filter instead, especially due to a large collection of those maple tree twirly helicopter seeds stuck in the filter; in that case putting in a new Fram Febreeze filter solved the problem. Now I take out the filter every few months and clean out all the crud to extend its life until the next replacement.
