Lost transmission fluid

So the 2008 lost all its transmission fluid in -21C weather this morning. Will be taking it to my mechanic next week (wait for a tow is 12+ hours and my mechanic is away until Tuesday). I managed to get the car home and then smoke billowed from under the hood.

Just another day in the world of this problem prone Accord.

I feel your pain my friend, my '08 was the worst accord I ever owned. If you can believe it, the trans was one of the one things that never had any issues. Mine was more engine oil issues and steering rack issues.
Keep us posted. Just thought I would add that my 07 had a strange transmission hiccup last night on the highway going 60MPH. Had a violent downshift that shook the car, but nothing else after that.
These transmissions and engines hate this bitter cold. And to think next week they are calling for overnight lows around -10F here I keep my heated garage at like 60 and hope cars are ok in the frigid work garage.

Ouch. Sorry to hear that Is the '08 an auto or manual? -21C is -5.8F... That's pretty darned cold.

Yikes. I hope my 09 holds it together. It's done well the few years I've had it... it was a Florida car up until I bought it. My poor baby lol.

Note that Markus is in Canada where the DW-1 is a full syn. vs a semi here in the US - wonder what happened to cause loss of fluid ?

Trans is 5AT. Fluid changes always performed on time. No trans issues at all before this sudden loss of fluid.

I was driving my wife to work and on the way home I noticed a burning smell and smoke from under the hood. I only had 3 miles to go so I continued and as I drove down my street I barely had any drive. Engine would rev ok but car had no power. Pulled into driveway and checked trans fluid dipstick and nothing on it.

I'm suspecting (hoping) that it's just a blown fluid line. Last time I looked under the car (about 2 months ago) they looked pretty rusty. Car has 252,000 km on it and has lived all its life in snowy/salty/cold/hot Ottawa.

Given the ambient temps forecast over the next week here in Ottawa (highs of -15C to -20C) and a snowy driveway I have no intention of tackling this issue myself.

After I shut the car off the engine cooling fan continued to run for a minute or so. I suspect a slightly overheated trans caused that. I also lost all heat from the climate system in the final half mile home even though the engine coolant temp gauge indicated normal. I suspect some kind of fail safe mode happened there.

I will update the thread when I learn more next week.

I drove in -20C on my 07 V6 a few days ago outside of Chicago area, with a transmission cooler mounted upfront, with zero issue.

Drain plug aside, the 2014 Accord V6 does not have a cooler going to the radiator, this is the most common cause of trans fluid loss on some J-series engine model Hondas where the fittings going into the radiator rust out, then trans fluid and coolant mixes. This car does have a trans warmer with a hockey puck acting as fluid exchanger with the cooling system. I'm wondering if one of the fittings or hose clamps is loose, causing all fluid to leak out.

This is great info but it's my 2008 that has the issue. The 2014 is fine.

The car is now parked until Tuesday and then we will see what's up when my mechanic looks at it. If it's a simple fix then it will be fixed. If the trans has gone bad (which I doubt at this point) then the car will be disposed of. It's only used by my kids now and I'm not prepared to put a replacement trans in it just for them.

Have a great new year!

How many qts low does the ATF have to be before it does not register on the dipstick?

I don't know the answer to either of these questions.

UPDATE:

The transmission cooler lines rotted at the radiator taking the radiator out too. So I need a new rad and two cooler lines and coolant and trans fluid. Car will be ready tomorrow. Will be about $800 Cdn with labour and taxes. Not cheap but not as bad as a failed transmission.

For a 2008 I'd probably find an ebay radiator from AZ () out of a rear ended totalled and buy new lines. $800 seems excessively expensive but they're probably billing for 3 hours labor. Easily a job I'd tackle myself but as you say it's friggin' cold there.

It's cold and snowy and I would have done it myself if not for the weather. The trans cooler lines have to be sourced from Honda, so I'm told.

Used parts from the non-rustbelt US might be an option but one of my daughters is due to take the car away on Thursday so the job really needs to be done ASAP.

My mechanic says he doesn't think there's any trans damage, which is good.

That explains the smoke, I was concerned about that. Doesn't seem like serious damage besides to the lines and rad then.
