Is coasting in neutral bad for your car?

Hello, everybody

On my commute home, there are a couple of stretches of road where I put my car (lx-s 5mt) in neutral, and coast for up to a mile at a time, to save gas. Does anybody know if this puts undo strain or wear on any drive-train components?

thanks

I do that too with mine.
I don't think it really effect your car but lately
I'm hearing few brake sounds whenever i push my brake... probably every 3 or 4 days?
Maybe its just my feeling but I personally dont think it really effect your car.

There's an old wives tale that says it's illegal in some places to coast in neutral. I have no idea if there's any truth to it.

You actually don't save any gas by putting car in neutral and coast. By doing so, engine has to use gasoline to keep the engine idling while you coast. Keeping the car in gear will shut off the fuel injectors and use momentum to keep the engine turning, thereby, saving you gas.

+1. Coasting in neutral won't hurt the car but it is a waste of gas.

I don't think that's true, because i used to do it al the time in my old car. I havent done it in my new car yet, and i probably wont just cuz i love my car XD

I would get about 250 a tank, then when i started to put it in neutral i would get almost 400 miles per tank.

My old car was an 07 Accord sedan SE AT btw.

Coasting won't hurt the car any, in fact you have to have more "heads-up" with traffic conditions up ahead to do this effectively in order to maximize the fuel economy gain.

So, while the fuel injectors may shut down while coasting in gear, in the long term it's far more likely that somone who coast in gear may not get as much benefit as someone who maintains momentum while coasting in netural.

EDIT: I should have added the above comment is for manual transmission only (as OP does), constantly shifting in and out on an automatic is unnecessary and can potentially accelerate wear of certain components within the transmission.

Calling it an old wives tail implies that it lacks truth ....

It's a 3 point violation in VA, and stays on your license for 3 years.

it is illegal to coast in neutral just incase there was ever a time you needed to accelerate to swerve out of the way.
but when i first got my car i definitely hit 600 miles to a tank popping it in neutral every chance i got.

You gained 150 miles per tank? Haha.
Really, if you are going down a hill, leave it in gear. Saves your breaks and uses less fuel.

yeah 150 a tank sounds about right, because im averaging about 400-500 a tank right now because im too lazy to pop it in neutral, opposed to when i did do it and got around 600 a tank.

It doesn't hurt the engine. I don't know about the fuel thing.

If you're driving an automatic, I don't know that I'd recommend it. If you should come to a point where for some reason you might need to accelerate for whatever reason and do it very quickly, you've added a step in there that isn't an organic one and can increase your response time. Personally this is one of the reasons I like driving a stick, I can just put my foot on the clutch when I want to coast, or even if I put it in neutral, getting back into gear is still a more organic movement than doing it in an automatic.

I guess it's not an old wives tale then. I wasn't about to check the laws in every state and province to find out.

Kinda silly though. It's like making a law that says you can't fart when you're alone. How do you prove it?
