Tinted Tail Lights are illegal!?!

I had my smoke tail lights for over 3 months already and never had any problem with the cops until last week I got pulled over by a state trooper and he gave me a warning to remove the tinted film off the tail lights. I told him that it has the DOT/SAE stamp on it. He didn't gives a sh*t he just told me that's illegal and to put back the original. Now I end up replacing it with Red tail lights. I've seen many cars around with tinted tail lights, didn't know they were illegal.

Should always check your local tint laws before getting tints.

IMO Tinting the tail light makes the light dim. I was following a car with its tail light tinted and could not see the light. I almost rear ended him. I never understood the reasoning behind tinting the tail lights....

I am pretty sure its the same up here in VT, don't quote me on that though as I haven't ever checked myself, but have heard from several people (couple of friends are local cops, and are good ones). I agree, with the others, I like my tails nice and bright, people have enough reasons for rear ending these days......

They look good and to some that's all that matters. Personally it's one mod I'd never add.

EDIT: Does it seem only State Troopers are pulling people over for things such as tinted tails and lack of license plate in the front?

Tinting the tails is illegal in the majority of states.
To the other guys, keep in mind the tail lights he has are the smoked LED version, therefore they have a smoked plastic and he didn't tint the taillights with say 20% tint like all the other assholes on the street I almost hit. DFW cops and state troopers don't seem to care so much. There's Mustangs and Camaro's and the typical Civic's that run solid black tail lights all the time and never get hassled. Where you live also plays a factor.

With most states scrambling to make money to attempt to balance their budgets, Tinting your tail lights is begging for a fine.

In New Jersey, it is illegal to tint factory tail lights.. but the clause says nothing about tinting aftermarket tail lights, so I believe you can get away with it if they are aftermarket. Check up on your laws, being that you don't have factory tail lights.

The law makes no sense to me but hey, if it works in your defense it's awesome.

And I have gotten warnings about my windows and my tails and I personally don't give a shhh. I have yet to get a ticket, and even if I do guess what they are staying on.

Too many things are "illegal" for dumb reasons. Tint I understand, but did you also know that HIDs are illegal unless they came factory in your car? Lowering your suspension is illegal, unless it was done factory. It's dumb.

HIDs and lowered suspension actually helps promote safety.

Your smoked ones looked great. It depends, I don't mind a bit of tint, but when you see people with completely black tails it's terrible, can't see shit during the day.

tint or no tint, legality should only be based upon the conformity to DOT photometry requirements. If the tint is not enough to effect thsoe requirements it should not make a difference. But.... its not a perfect world.

It's worse at night when the smoked tails block out the driving lights and make brake lights look like driving lights if you actually can see them.
