Lightbulb Aftermarket Sunroof Install

Hello DA,

Anybody have a sunroof installed aftermarket? To do this, they need to drill thru the roof of the vehicle. Any issues with doing something like this? Will I need to worry about issues like rainwater leaking during over time?

Also anybody know the avg price range for this install at a pro shop?

Probably way too expensive and not worth it. Easier to trade in car for one that has one with factory.

lol it's not good to assume ...

I had an aftermarket sunroof installed in my last 8th gen coupe . Well, the owner before me had it installed. It looked stock and one would not have known it wasn't if they didn't see another 8th gen accord coupe with a sunroof...

Never leaked. I used the power washer on my cars, again, no issue .
It would close when you turned off the car just like the stock one.

I can't think of any negatives . Just find someone whose done it before .

Neither the paint nor the interior was affected at all by the install. It was an lx-i4 and that was the only real mod that was done, having said that, I can't imagine someone would have spent a boat load of cash to install a sunroof in the most basic accord; one would assume it was not that much money...

I'm quite positively sure the brand was Inalfa...

Would not do something like this to a modern vehicle. If it's not done correctly it will lower the vehicles value and can become a huge headache.

People ask about switching out their engine.... In a Honda Accord .

Suddenly a sunroof is rocket science ? Interesting...

engine swaps have literally been a thing for decades.

sunroof................ retrofits though? lmao... not so much afaik. i'm not saying it hasn't or can't be done – since you say you've had it done to your car – and i definitely get your point but those are two totally different worlds imo. and it certainly doesn't take rocket science to figure out which makes more sense from a general perspective.

I did some research before posting this thread, so I def know it's do-able.

It doesn't look TOO hard from these 2 videos

It may not look hard to do. But it's hard to get it right. And often aftermarket sunroofs develop leaks and/or wind noise. But it's your car - do what you want. I know I would never buy a used car with an aftermarket sunroof and I know others who feel the same. SO if resale value is important to you you may want to think twice about an aftermarket sunroof.

For what it's worth....

As I mentioned.. My last 8th gen accord had an aftermarket sunroof. I was not even aware it was aftermarket until a few months after I bought it. The only way I found out is, the button to open it said Inalfa and not Honda or anything, I then googled that and discovered it was aftermarket. Inalfa does make OEM sunroofs for car manufacturers...

In other words, my aftermarket sunroof was no different than the stock, OEM one. Zero wind noise, zero leaking.... I had ivory interior so ANY leak would have been easily noticed. It was driven through Midwest rainstorms and snow storms multiple times, again zero problems. I have on OEM sunroof in my 8th gen I drive now, wind noise or operation are not any different .

Aftermarket sunroofs have also been installed for decades now. Not some new invention somebody thought up just recently.
They do them for trucks all the time.

It's water and some seals your dealing with. Not an engine with thousands of moving parts and such . Would I do it myself? Probably not. But if I wanted it done I wouldn't think twice about taking it somewhere . I'm sure they would have a warranty on their work. They aren't gonna slap it in the top of your car then say, "good luck, it shouldn't leak. If it does, that's your problem "

Still on the fence about this one... my thoughts,

When looking at risk vs reward, there are a lot of shops that do specialize in aftermarket sunroof installations. Thus, I do believe it is relatively safe if installed by a professional. Like PlayaPlaya mentioned, there are a lot of companies that make aftermarket sunroofs. With that being said, I called a shop and was quoted $1,300 for their most high end model, which includes everything; electric auto open, close, etc, and a 3 year warranty. However, when looking at cost vs reward, I think I'm going to hold off for a little longer and think about it some more. For now, I'm leaning towards some Katzkin leather with that type of money. Haven't ruled it out in the future though.
