Alpine Type S or Type R?

Alright, so I have finally decided what to do to improve my stock sound in the lx-s.

I'm going to replace all the speakers with either Alpine Type S or Type R and have it powered by the factory unit. (no sub or amp).

My question to everyone is (because I know many people on this forum have had experiences with these speakers), is which ones should i get?

I'm going to be replacing the front and rears speakers (6 speakers total).

If not these speakers, which would you recommend that would get the most amount of bass without installing a sub.

ALSO: Please do not move this to the Audio section, this strictly applies to the 8th gen owners.

Type-R's are better, but if you aren't going to power them with an amp you are just doing yourself a dis-service in my opinion.

If no amp, definitely the Type-S's..

I can second the Type R setup. I have a complete Type R system in my car, and it sounds amazing! I also have 2 Alpine amps driving the sub and components. Without amps, I don't think these speakers will do justice. You might be better off sticking with Type S if you are using the factory amp.

I agree with this. I've got the 6.5" Type-S components (or separates) and I think as far as mid-range and high's they are excellent and probably pretty comparable to the Type-R's. They are very clean and detailed up to full volume. No distortion. BUT, they do lack a bit in the lower end. I have a sub that blends really well with them so it works out great for me, but if you are not going to get a sub, or if you are going to get a low powered sub, then Type-R's are definately the way to go. As others have mentioned, if you don't plan to amp them, then you actually would probably be better off with something like the Boston Acoustics S95's and S60's. They are lower power and high efficiency so they'll run good from a stock HU/amp. The S60's are only rated at 55WRMS which, even the Type-S components are rated at 80W-RMS. I've also read that the BA's have really good bass response for a "factory replacement" speaker.

you're going to under power the speakers without an amp, and you're not going to get max output out of them. as soon as you put all the power to one speaker you'll know the potential of the nice speakers you just put in.

i have an EX-L, so it has a little more power, but i had the alpine type S splits up front and coax's in the rear and they sounded pretty good. i ended up upgrading them to JL's and adding an amp, but for the power of the factory head unit, the type S's will work better than the type R's

i dont think the stock lx-s 160 watt is even enough power to handle 2 6.5 type-s's in the back.
