Why is the battery so small?

I don't know if it's normal but i have a 2008 accor 4 cylinder and the batterie is a 51r 475 honda. What i don't understand is that the battery is much smaller than the battery box. Is that normal? The batterie is only 30 months old and it already can't start the car when it is cold.

I was thinking of buying a kirkland batterie, much bigger and more cranking amp.

This morning it was -35 and i didn't had enough power to start the car. Even when it's only -20 i got problems. At least then engine and starter seem to be fine.

This issue has been discussed many times on the forum. The tray is bigger because the V6 has a bigger battery. A lot people opt to swap out the small I4 battery for the V6 battery.

Thanks, I'l just buy a group 35 kirkland battery and make it fit

The accord is ex-l navigation and it's in Canada where temperature of -30 are common, 475cca is way waaayyyyy to little.

Yea it's normal and it sucks. I had my battery replaced with one that had more cca's (cold cranking amps). Trust me, you can get a bigger battery to fit the stock battery box.

I have an I4 which came with the pathetic small battery. The only modification I had to make when installing a bigger battery was to bend up the two tabs on the battery bracket, which are bent down to hold the small battery in place.

Just confirmed our 2011 has the Group 35 battery with 440 CCA.

Kirkland (Costco) it is then unless the 24F is recommended for higher CCA and RC (reserve capacity):
Heads up: i4 won't fit a 24F battery, 35 only

When I bought my car last year, one of the first things I did was check the battery. It was replaced with a slightly larger battery, but I replaced that one with a comparable V6 battery. When our local temps hit -17 below my car started the first time around (It did hesitate and that has never happened before).

Honda simply tried to save a little money. Put the bigger battery in and call it good.

Thanks guys, 24F it is then when I will require a battery replacement.

From Post # 2782842, it seems 24F is the better one to go with since the stock battery that came with our Accord is already the Group 35 one.

Here's a little breakdown on the Duralast batteries that are sold at Auto Zone:

27F-DLG Duralast Gold: 710 CCA, 165 reserve min., 50 lbs., $109
24F-DLG Duralast Gold: 750 CCA, 135 reserve min., 44 lbs., $109
35-DLG Duralast Gold: 640 CCA, 100 reserve min., 38 lbs., $116

Also, in an earlier post, the 27F is longer and might not fit the battery base:
24F: 10 3/4(L) x 6 13/16(W) x 9(H)
27F: 12 1/2(L) x 6 13/16(W) x 8 15/16(H)
35 : 9 1/16(L) x 6 7/8(W) x 8 7/8(H)

I'll pick up Part No. 31512-TA0-A10 PLATE, BATTERY SETTING which is the V6 Battery Hold Down bracket when I go for a service at our local dealership.

I'm surprised to have been able to fit (without battery base), a Group 34 battery into my 02 Civic. That has a 790 CCA!

The I4 comes with a 51R by default where the 24F is massively bigger.

No way you would be able to fit the 27F in there unless you completely tossed the tray.

I will likely go for the 24F unless the Kirkland Group 35 has decent CCA and RC ratings.

I was beginning to think ours came with a 51R but because we live in Canada and it was already 2011, maybe they relented and hesitatingly put in a Group 35 battery!
