noisy climate control motor

in the right hand side somewhere under the glovebox closer to the floor there is a noisy motor whirring sound that happens when the temperature system is on. when you press the button in and turn that off the noise goes away immediately with the winding down sound of a motor.

when it is on that sound is constantly on, and is not affected by the temperature you have it set at or how hard the fan is blowing.

i'm beginning to think something is running noisier than it should...

That's most likely the HVAC blower fan, mine too makes a similar noise (especially from the passenger side). I'm adding that to my list of items I'll want my dealer to look at when I take it in for other warranty repairs.

I'll have to listen closely on my way to work this morning. I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary.

Is this your first car with AUTO climate control? The system will adjust vent positions, temp mix, and turn recirc on and off by itself unlike a manual system. There are penty of servos that can be active in the dash.

Do you notice the noise mostly in the morning? Does the whirring get louder/faster as the fan is turned up?

I just commuted in to work and ran my auto climate at different speeds and temps...quiet as can be (the blower motor) aside from the sound of air and shifting from windshield to floor/upper vents.

if i was getting some squirrel cage sound from a hvac motor that new, i'd def get it over to the dealer to be addressed asap.

my neon had its blower motor do that every now and then....a good kick to the glove box from my passenger or a reach over and punch would cure it almost all the time....while this might be a temp fix, get it over to the dealer

the sound never gets louder or quieter. its always the same, always on when the temp system is one. it is like a squirrel in a cage as someone mentioned.

it's a common symptom/sound on Mercedes when the blower motor bearing is on the outs ... after 15-20 years of normal use of course...that's why the term came to mind immediately from your OP's description.

keep us posted on what the dealer says.

I did listen to mine and didn't hear anything - only the sound of blowing air when the system was on.

The squirrel cage description is appropriate. That's what most blower fans actually look like.

I have the same sound, it's not really loud - I can only hear it if i have the radio off or on at a very low volume. Most of the time i adjust and don't even acknowledge it's there after a few minutes of driving. I think it's normal, and wouldn't think it's cause for alarm.

I am pretty sure it should be dead silent.

I am getting the same faint noise on my EX blower motor. Its almost like a chattering noise but not super loud. I took a look underneath and it appears the blower motor and fan will drop right out by removing a few screws.

Let us know what the dealer says. I may take mine in tomorrow for a check. Maybe it just needs some lube.

Other than that I am digging my EX sedan.

Regards,

DT

I am so glad I found you guys

I have the same problem on my new 08 Accord. I am loving it, but last week I took it in for a new low-jack. When I picked up the car, and drove home I starting hearing that noise. I took it back, and they told me that there was a bulletin on Honda regarding a "whining" noise. Brought it back for the necessary "repairs". Went back, got the car, noise is still there. Now, my wipers don't work. Went back, complained about the noise. They can't here. So I thought it was just me. I had a friend check it out, and he too hears the noise.

I am so glad I have read your post. I have figured that this noise must be coming from the fan blower motor, maybe the bearings, didn't think about that. Well, thanks for your information. I will send a letter to my dealer and honda and see if I can get to the bottom of this. I will let you know what happens.

same issue!

I have a 08 sedan without climate control, but when I engage the fan (from off to the lowest setting) the noise starts. as I advance the fan setting, the noise is constant.

I took it to a dealership, and no one there could hear it. They finally got the office manager and he was able to hear the noise, but said that was normal operation noise.

It's not very loud, but it reminds me of when a bearing is going out in one of my PC's fans.

I'm wondering if anyone (since there are people here who are not experiencing the problem) have convinced honda to replace it?

If they wont, I'm tempted to do it myself, it's that annoying.

I'm also hearing a high-pitched "whining" noise when the fan is in the low speeds. When I crank the fan up, the sound of the air drowns it out. Did anyone ever have this successfully addressed at a dealer?

my dealer said "it's normal" and it seems that it is. i got into a new car to test it out on their lot and it made the same noise. my girlfriends 1998 Accord does not do that.

Honda should really address this problem.
