Mobil 1 Extended Performance Synthetic Oil

Hey everyone,

I just did another routine oil change over the weekend, but I did use a different oil and I would like to hear what some of your thoughts are.

I used the Mobil 1 fully synthetic Extended Performance Oil. The Extended Performance guarantees engine protection for 15,000 miles. I also got the Extended Protection Mobil 1 Oil Filter (Couldn't really go wrong when Pep Boys had a deal for 5 qt and the filter for 29.99).

My main question is: is this 15,000 mile protection crap just a marketing ploy? Or if I maintain the oil level in the engine, then I won't need to do another oil change for 15k?

I initially thought that I would be able to wait 15k to do the next oil change, but for some reason I just started questioning myself. When I do my next oil change I'm going to send the oil in to get analyzed from the blackstone labs so they can tell me exactly how long I should have run on the EP oil, but I'm just kind of fishing for personal experiences or professional advice on this.

Thanks!

The oil % meter the car has is a pretty good thing to follow. I run Syn regular Mobil 1 5-20 with a Purolaotor Pure One. Change the oil per the meter and the oil filter every other change just like Honda says to. Honda engines seem to be bullet proof, so you could probly use regular dino and a regular filter and follow the % and skip filter changes and the thing would still last 200K+. Just remember extended intervals collect more contaminents. Contamination has nothing to do with syn oil, has to do more with engine design/use.

Point: Oils designed for "extended use" cost more, and to me are not worth the extra $. M1 & P1 and following the Honda book is within budget, and works for me. Better than 99% of what most folks do for oil changes.

I would strongly advise to do the UOA at 10,000 miles. There are UOA's on Bobistheoilguy where it did hold up to 15K miles but there are a great deal where it did not. Blackstone will guide you as to change it then or go farther.

But would your oil filter hold up to 15K... Just do the regular Mobil 1 every 5K. I like to have fresh oil every 5K. And also, if you have loose metal in your oil, it will now be in there fore 15K as well.

Oil change every 5k? And with high price oil??? Scrap that!!!!!!!!!

I would do exactly what RFTexas said. Get a UOA at 10k and see what comes back. I have had two done at 6 and 7500 and each came back very good. 10k can be obtained easily, but 15k I would get UOA's done for sure to verify your doing well.

How much better is the Mobil1 Extended Performance vs. the regular Mobil1 synthetic oil? I'm currently running Mobil1 5W30.

Based on what people are saying...nothing has been proven yet to say it is any better. Oil all depends on your car and the driving conditions and the environment and a lot of variables.

The best advice is to get a UOA(Used Oil Analysis) after you do an oil change with different oil. You will get a report stating what contaminants they found and how long your engine can run on that oil.

I just put in the Mobil 1 Extended Protection 5w-20 and I'm going to do a UOA around 10k

I change my oil every 10k miles without any issues.

I use Royal Purple full synthetic, and a Fram 10k XTended Guard Oil filter.

I have been on Royal Purple since 50k miles, and am now at 78k

I've been doing 10k changes with syn oil since 10k miles with totally no loss of oil. Honda makes engines that are so good it will run on cooking oil.

Use Full Syn Moble1
Change filter at every oil change
Follow honda minder at 15%to5%
Drain and fill ATF after 30K at every oil change
Enjoy

A total waste of perfectly good synthetic oil. Any regular off the shelf dino will easily go 5K and many a great deal further.

25,000 Mile Oil

I just did my ANNUAL oil change on my 2003 Accord LX 4 cyl. I used Amsoil Signature Series 0W-20 Full Synthetic and the Amsoil 25K mile "EA" oile filter. I drove exactly 25,000 miles on this oil, and yes.......it was dirty coming out, but no big deal. I can't get the 25K filter right now, so I did Mobil1 with a Mobil1 filter, and will run that 15K.

What'a all this talk about the oil life meter and a dashboard light? Is that just on the EX models?
