Best oil/filter combination?

Well, planning to change my oil before school starts, although it isn't due for that time, just rather be safe.

I've been looking to get Valvoline Full Synthetic but it's like $45 for 5 quarts, don't think it's worth it to pay that much. Also heard about Royal Purple but also expensive.

What's the best oil and filter for the 7th Gen Sedan?

Also, what's the best 5W-20, 10W...yadda yadda. That's all mumbo-jumbo, and explanations aren't all that great. Which one do you guys recommend for this car?

I'm a fan of Mobil 1 Full Synthetic and Mobil 1 Filter. $22 for 5 quarts at Wal-Mart and the filter is something like $10 I think.

I have considered the Castrol Full Synthetic, but haven't tried it yet.

As for the oil weight, what does it say in your manual/on the oil cap?

Pennzoil Platinum $20/5Qt jug at Wally World.

Mobil 1 M1-110 usually on sale 2/$20.

Some Wally Worlds, usually in wealthier areas, have them for $8.

If you don't have a strong opininion one way or another about weight,go with Honda recommended 5w-20 and call it a day.

Change every 10k miles or once a year.

This is a $15 rebate for the purchase of 5 qts of Pennzoil Platinum.

If you buy at Wally world that comes to $1 per quart.

Better than $45 huh?

I use Mobil 1 5000 5w-30 with Purolator PureOne oil filter. $11 for the oil and $5 for the filter, can't be beat IMO

m1 +m1 filter is good.

I hear PP is great too. There was a thread a while back about the "new" honda filter being not as good. I forget the details.

I also read that for a regular cheap wix is good.

Coming from the RSX crowd, there was someone a few years back that did several oil test swatches and the results came back the best (least traces) after running Mobil 1. I think the same filter type was used in each test, but I can not confirm that.
here is all I cound find, digging back to 2004:

Amsoil has test kits available to those curious if their oil is up to the task

I'll be driving about 15k miles a year. Don't think it's healthy to wait that long to change the oil.

I agree. These extended oil change intervals people are talking about, 1 or 2 years, really depend a lot on how you drive.

A mechanic I talked with, who knew he wasn't getting any business from me and was just being nice, put it this way:
When using synthetic, if you drive hard, do things like jackrabbit starts and tough city driving (like we have in Houston ~_~ ), then you should change your SYNTHETIC oil just like regular every 3K or 4K.
If you are nice to your car, don't rev it high at every stop sign or light change, and do not have to subject it to stop and go inner city freeway driving, then you can push that up to what the oil recommends or even a little past.

Heck, even BMW which IIRC has a sealed engine setup, changes the oil at 15K intervals.

Now, I'm not saying you can't drive your car with the same synthetic for one to two years, but I really wouldn't recommend it.

Especially when you think about it in this context: Changing your oil is relatively inexpensive, especially if you do it yourself. Having repair work done because your engine wasn't lubricated properly could be really expensive.

I choose to error on the side of caution, but for those who go for the several year oil change, I honestly hope it works well for ya.

Just another suggestion, if you are going to go with the 1 to 2 year change method, I highly recommend you visit this site and have your oil analyzed. Pay for the additional additive test which checks to see how much of the additive is left in your oil or has burned up/broken down.

They will send you the oil test kit for free, you pay $22.50 for the regular analysis and $10 more for the additive analysis.

You can also order a little pump from them for $30 so you can keep driving with your existing oil/not do an oil change. Just remove what you need of your existing/current-in-use oil, then add some extra to make up for the test sample.

If your oil report comes back with good numbers, then keep driving like you are. If it comes back with bad numbers, you may want to consider changing your oil more often.
