New alternator

I had a quick question for some of the experts. It seems my alternator died yesterday. The car went from starting normally to completely dead an hour later. I just had a new battery put in last year so I don't think it is that, and when I had a friend jump it, it started immediately...so I don't think it's the starter.

I called my local honda dealer and set up an appointment to get it fixed. When I asked him if he could give me an idea of the cost to fix it, he said he couldn't. I thought that was weird that the service dept couldn't quote me a price?? I live in a smaller town, and am concerned they may hike the price on me. Any ideas on how much a new (not refurbished) alternator for an 2000 Accord EX-V6 should cost with installation, etc??

Thanks for the help!

-Chris

Just ask them what the labor costs are for replacing the starter. He probably doesn't want to give you a price depending upon what you asked. If you asked how much it will take to fix my car, then that's a loaded question. You will need to call their parts department for $ on the OEM alternator. You might want to have it rebuilt by a local alternator shop with new brushes, etc. instead. I would stay away from the rebuilt starters at most of the discount parts stores.

First off have the battery charged and then load tested, that will zoom in on or eliminate the battery itself. It could be the alternator is okay and the battery is FUBAR. Check the simple things first.....and it's usually free.

Good idea RTexasF. You can also take it to a local auto parts store & they will usually do a charging system test for free.

Thanks for all the info. Texas was right, I just told them the car wouldn't start. To my disbelief they said it was only the battery. Charging system and alternator are OK....and the battery was even under warranty so the whole deal cost me nothing. It is strange though, that battery didn't even last 2 years. It was a honda battery...are they known for not being very reliable?? Also, I know it's a dummy light, but I never got the battery warning light on the instrument panel to warn me it was dying or weak. This exact same thing happened less than 2 years ago when the other battery (also a honda) died. Why bother even putting the warning lights up there if they don't work! Either way thanks for the info!

Well, I don't have any experience with replacing an alternator in an Accord, but I had to replace the alternator in a 95 Lexus ES at one time and that was between $400 and $500 for parts (new, not refurbished) and labor. This wasn't at the dealer, though.

About the battery light. It has NO relevance to the condtion of the battery.
Its there to indicate when there is a fault with the alternator/charging system
Either it's not charging or overcharging when lit.

It comes on when the key is on with the engine is off as the regulator inside the alternator sees no voltage being generated, as soon as the alternator spins fast enough to charge the regulator will shut the light off.

The V6 Gen 6 Accords with the crummy Delphi alternators are known to have problems. They tend to lose diodes within the alternator, which make it whine, and get extremely hot. As the diodes go, it loses a percentage of it's charging capacity. So if you were to drive with all accessories on, the battery may eventually go dead from lack of charge.

On many GM cars, I've seen the Delphi alternators catch on fire from this. The whine is unmistakeable. Deep low, almost metallic whine, follows revs.

Was your battery the original Delco (pretty good batteries for the most part) or a Honda replacement?

For a replacement alternator, I'd expect around 300-350 depending on the labor charge. The price of a Honda reman alternator (delphi) isn't very high.

I don't think you can get a new alternator anymore, just rebuilt. A new one would be hideously expensive anyway.

I have a 2011 honda accord (just 3 years old) and it wouldn't start yesterday. Lights seemed fine so the tow truck ruled out the battery. It happened out of nowhere, no signs of trouble before that. Had it towed to a mechanic that says it's the altinator. I honestly don't trust him but in NYC there are storage fees and a fee if you don't get the service, so looks like I'm replacing a 3 year old old (30k miles) honda altinator.

Any advice? Experiences? I just joined AAA so in the future I'll have a tow guy who gives a damn. I'm going to ask for the old part just because I want to make sure $500 is going towards something real. I'm disappointed in my Accord. Drove it off the lot 3 years ago and this seems like a repair that shouldn't be happening.

Isn't your car under warranty? Take it to a dealer.
