Oil Change Help -2.4L

Hi, I changed out the Factory oil today. The manual says the car holds 4.4 quarts with the filter. I put in 4.4 quarts, maybe 4 and 1/2, close enough. I noticed the oil level is only half way up the dipstick. Has anyone else noticed this? Should I put more in? Would seem to then take almost 5 quarts.

I put 5 quarts into my 6th gen, and it says it takes only 4.5. Normally it does only take 4.5 though. I don't know, I just put it in and didn't worry about it. Same oil filter and everything.

Honda dealer said 4.4 quarts which is what the manual states, takes it to the middle of the dipstick, between the add and top full mark.

anywhere between the two holes is enough.

HMMM? Mine always takes 4.5 quarts when the oil is changed (2.4L). VTECadddict has it on the nose - If the dipstick is between the first and second hole on the dipstick, all is bueno.

rtf... you are right, anywhere between is cool, but I put mine to the top mark. so if I were to lose any, which I haven't, my range before refilling is more.

Perhaps you did not wait long enough for the new oil to drain down. The difference between 4.4 and 4.5 quarts would not be noticable. If you put in the recommended amount (with filter change), you are fat city, all is well.

to get the most oil out of an engine during oil change, engine must be at full operating temperature and drain for up to 20 minutes.

I ran the engine for awhile, then drained all the oil out. The car sat 24 hours after putting in 4.5quarts and it was half way up the dipstick, between the add and full mark. I then added another 1/4 of a quart and it's slightly below the full mark. Probably could take another 1/4 of a quart. Weird. All my cars previously went to the top mark. I think what Honda did was idiot proof so people couldn't over fill it. Which can be easy to do if your not carefull.

I wonder if it's the wrong dipstick? Mine goes right to the mark with a 4.5 qt. oil and filter change....after I've run it and let it settle back into the pan.

According to this thread, it's normal. Should be in the middle. Can take a bit more if needed.

Just don't overfill the crankcase. Over filling can cause foaming if the crank hits the oil which can cause starvation which leads to baked bearings which leads to rod knock which leads to a new motor.
