RACE POLL: 2007 Vs 2008 V6 6MT

So who would you think would win?

I have a 2007 V6 6MT and my best friend has a 2008 V6 6MT...

We have been talking about going to the drags soon to see which one is faster. I weight less but he has a 3.5L instead of my 3.0L. I may be a slightly better drive too ; )

It will probably be a drivers race. Just try to take out as much weight from the car as you can before going to the track.

Good idea. I will have to bury those dead bodies in my trunk this weekend at some point.

How much more does the 08 weight....I wanna say like 300 lbs more but .5L more in the engine. Ill go look for some stat comparisons

This is a rediculous question but bare with me.....

I have never been down and Actual drag strip. I am a good driver and have been driving MT all my life. I just dont know how to launch properly. I really dont want to ping my car off red line and dump the clutch. I would assume that would just break traction, start spinning, and hurt the car. Do you release the clutch slow to slip it just a bit before it engages? Should I just rev it half way and then release the clutch so I dont break friction?

Please fill me in...

I would advise doing a few practice launches first (somewhere safe and legal, of course. ) Obviously, you're going to want to release the clutch faster than usual (dump the clutch) but not so fast that you stall. Use your experience and the practice launches will help you develop the muscle memory for dumping the clutch properly. Start at lower RPM's first, then work your way up to find the right spot. The condition of your tires, among other factors, will affect your launches so it's best to know your car well by developing intuition through practice.

Don't forget, the more launches and the harder the launches you do, the more you are going to wear your clutch so practice wisely. The 6-6 accord, while sporty, isn't a true sports car so the clutch and brakes will heat up fast and are not designed to take repeated hard launches in a short span of time. Drive safe and have fun!

Understood....I dont want to beat on my baby. I just dont get how people redline it at the drags and then dump the clutch. How does that help at all? They just spin. I would assume you can start at like 3k in the RPM range or so and then let the clutch off enough to engage and not slip, and not stall, but not break friction. Its a very fine line to get right. When we plan a definite date to race, Ill try a few practice runs.

Perhaps that works well in other cars, or folks are just doing it for show (all that wheel spin and smoke can be exciting, kids!) but in the Accord I wouldn't launch with the engine revved all the way up to redline.

If you dump the clutch 3000Rpm you will either bog or get wheel hop. You're going to have to walk it out by slipping the clutch at about 3000Rpm. A drag strip is MUCH sticker than a public road!

Where did you get those specs? The weight on the 8th Gen seems overestimated. The 2008 V6 6MT should win every time if your friend is a consistent driver.

And where's the poll?
