Exclamation Best MPG speed on the highway?

I live in california and here on the highway, if there is no traffic, we do an easy 70 mph easy, some areas of the highway everyone's going 85ish... So my question is.. what is the highest speed at one can travel in an 07 v6 ex-L accord coupe, while achieving optimum gas mileage...

I'm hoping the reply isn't
"travel at 65 mph"

I can tell you this...anything over 80 in the TL meant no more over 30MPG on the highway.

In reality....65 will easily give you excellent mileage...but 70-75 should yield over 30 numbers too.

i read anything over 50-55 increases drag so much it has a detrimental effect on your mpg

^^Right, as speed doubles parasite drag quadrouples. the old rule of thumb is to drive as slow as you can remaining in car's highest gear (w/o lugging).

you're not going to like this.. it'll be a good bit less than 65. how many mpg is your time worth?

that is correct, 50 to 55mph gives the best mpg in most vehicles

Best speed will be whatever the MPH with engine in the 1500-1800 rpm range in high gear. I'd say around 45-55 depending on model/engine/tranny.

Exactly. All you'd need to do is measure the rate of flow of the fuel pump at a given speed. Then increase or decrease speed to find the lowest flow rate per mile.

Something to keep in mind is the new EPA MPG estimates. The major change they did, that resulted in about 10% less of a rating on average, was increase the speed from 60 to 70.

I haven't made enough long trips with my Accord to find its sweet spot, but every car has one. My first Volvo 744 was around 80mph on long trips and 93 octane resulting in 29-30 MPG (not bad since it was rated for 26). My 93 Bonneville was at 75MPH, where it got 33MPG with the AC on (summer, long trips)on 87 octane. The Blazer was 68MPH at 21MPG on 87 octane ((best was 24MPG on "real gas")).

From the one long trip I took with my Accord I can say this. The only way to get good mileage is to slow down with this car. When I averaged 60 I got about 29MPG. On the sections I averaged higher (75 to 80) I only got 25MPG to 26MPG. Of course it only had 1200 to 3200 miles during that trip, so this is bound to go up some.

......roger that.

On four separate trips - a couple approaching 400 miles - my 6M has logged 38 twice and 39 twice........using the 6th gear OD, circa 2200 RPM - - which is about 65 MPH.

That's the high side of the freeway numbers. Most times we see 33 - 37 MPG.

Do you happen to know the time of year, altitude & temperature where those trips occurred? Also remember that the 2003-2006 Accords speedometers are over by about 5%. So any mileage calculated based upon miles driven (Is their any other reliable way?) would also be over by about 5%.

there plenty of data out there, just do google search for like "Best speed for MPG"

most data i have seen is around below 50 MPH for most cars. Thats why they use such high overdrive ratio's.

.....I suspect you're either spoofing me (or you've too much time........) on temp, elevation et al................

Only data I have is for the 4/30/2007 39 MPG trip: LA to just north of Lodi; 355 miles/5 hours, 10 minutes on 9.083 gal. of 87.

AHC memo'd me on the speedo error (so I had mine calibrated; it's right on the money).

appreciate your input, ez....

I've been driving 65mph dead on the highway. I had an average of 40.3mpg on a 35-mile trip according to the ScanGauge. And I filled up my last tank at 420 miles without the gas light even on. Filled only 12.8 gallons so it yielded 32 or so mpg with 65% highway, 35% city driving. Thats' damn impressive!! But one drawback is that I'm driving like a granny at such an old age of 25. lol
