Akebono or Nissin Caliper?

How would I know if my 2004 EXL I4 is equipped with AKEBONO or NISSIN brake caliper?

Go to Majestic Honda.com, and enter your car. Compare the brake calliper with the one shown. You can easily tell just by the length of the calliper bolts (I think).

Just checked, and there doesn't seem to be a choice. Apparently there is only one brand. Which one, I don't know.

You have to pull the wheels and look. It's cast into the caliper itself.

I can't remember the last time I saw a Honda with Akebono calipers. Honda's been using Nissin for quite some time.

I did some research earlier and all I found so far was for AKEBONO the bolt is supposed to be tightened at 26 ft lb (35 Nm). The NISSIN bolt is tighten to 37 ft lb (50 Nm).

Thanks for your input BLCKFLSH.

They had both brands for my 92 Accord, and you could easily tell which one (nissin or akebono) you had by the length of the bolts/pins. If you could find a part illustration of each one, you could compare them to your own. Majestic only shows one calliper, and there is no mention of which brand it is. Are you sure the two brands were made for the 04 Accord?

I got the service information from 'Auto Repair Reference Centre (ARRC) after providing my car's make and model year.

I wanted to know the brake caliper brand installed on my car so that I would be able to apply the correct torque on flange bolt.

On another thread, the torque setting for flange bolt is 26 ft lb(Front Brake Replacement - How To?), which I assumed for AKEBONO brake caliper.

Here is what I found from another service manual.

Torque setting for front disc caliper flange bolt:
I4 = 26 ft lb
V6 = 37 ft lb

So based on information I gathered from two different service manuals, I would assumed that I4 is of AKEBONO type and V6 is NISSIN.

I have the Helm service manual, and 26 ft lb is correct for the I4. The service manual does not specify what brand of calliper it is.

So I recently had to deal with this conundrum too. 37 or 25 on the slide pin bolts. Check out the diagram closely though:

I noticed that the EX calipers I got to replace my LX calipers required me to hold the slide pin with a 18 or 19mm wrench to stop it spinning. The LX calipers had the "wing" on them that held itself. So I concluded that my EX calipers were Nissin and the LX ones were Akebono.

FWIW, I ordered a replacement rear caliper a few months ago and it was made by Nissin, not Akebono.

Just put new rear calipers on my 04 EXL I4 accord. They were nissin calipers and I ordered them from majestic Honda.
