Installing Aftermarket System on 2006 Honda Accord

I just bought a 2006 Honda Accord EX-V6 with Dual Zone Climate Controls. I want to install an aftermarket cd player into the car, but I don't want to lose the dual-climate controls. Is that possible? Do I need any other parts? I'm also concerned what the dash will look like with the new head unit installed.

I remember with my old car which was a 97 Mecury Sable, the dash was beautiful with the factory installed stuff, but after I had an aftermarket head unit put in, the dash then looked basic and more ugly. Do newer cars look better with aftermarket or just as bad? Thank you.

Welcome to DA!

Luckily for 7th gen owners, a is available that installs in the center storage bin area. You do however, lose a good amount of storage space in the area. It looks way better than the upper dash kit and will give you a cleaner look. Search around for a better price. makes one and do does .

Here's the Scosche kit in 421's Accord:

Re:

Thank you for your reply.

Another question I have is with the lower dash, I understand the factory stereo remains in the car and is non-functional. If I understand correctly, the dual zone climate controls still are fully functional, is that right? What about the display screen where the dual zone climate control information is on, does that screen still work for those controls, or is that non-functional as well? Common sense wise, I don't think the dual zone climate controls can be used well without the information on the display screen, so I assume that part of the screen still works, right?

Thanks again.

I don't have dual climate control, but the stock radio & all the a/c buttons (excluding the green/yellow indicating what you have selected) are now off and do not light up with the headlights, and I'm totally cool with that because now it's darker in my car.

I'm guessing that display won't be functional because it's probably on the radio harness, but I could be totally wrong as I have no clue sorry I can't be of any help

You lose all radio functions from the stock headunit (CD changer, XM, etc.) and everything else stays functional (the LCD screen minus audio source info, climate controls, etc.).

Hmmm, it should continue to illuminate like normal. Maybe there's a special way to wire so it works. Not sure though...

probably, but like I said I prefer it darker in my car anyways so I'm happy.

I remember seeing a thread where if you were to put aftermarket hu in the cubby, there's a harness that can convert your stock HU to a 6-disc changer ?? maybe, I don't remember, I can't find it so if anyone remembers/knows, HBO

I remember a thread on V6P. The poster didn't provide much information on how he did it. I'll try to find the thread to see if there are any updates.

^Found the . Looks like you'll need the OEM y-cable and some basic wiring to get it working.

I wondered this also re: keeping the stock HU (CD changer part) operational, but this post seems like it won't work:

"Crutchfield sells them too. I found it easier to just crimp the wires, but thats only because I couldn't find my soldering iron. It was not hard at all and still keeps the stock climate control/radio working, just no sound from the stock system."

Kunal is dead on, yeshuaseven, and the Metra kit that actually replaces the whole stock HU is very ugly, cheap and doesn't blend in well at all. On top of that you lose the dual climate control. I was never thrilled with losing all of the storage of the nice cubby hole but that is the WAY better option.

And why exactly do you want an after market unit? The reason why I am asking is because if you want it primarily to play MP3s, there is a much better option and it lets you keep the stock HU fully operational, 6-disc changer and all! Check out a few of these threads:

illumination on HVAC controls lost after installing aftermarket audio head unit

I have the same issue with the illumination not working on any of the controls of the factory radio and climate control after disconnecting the connector A from the factory head unit, and connecting it to the aftermarket via a wiring harness after my DIY install (see attached pics of the fitment). The green and orange LEDs above the buttons work, but not the illumination....

From the service manual connector diagram it looks like the illumination control wires ("dim control") for all the controls (radio + temperature and blower) are on this same harness and not the harness that connects the temperature and blower controls... Does anyone know that this is the case, and I didn't blow some fuse or some bulb that makes the illumination light?

Though I've learned the location/arrangement of the buttons and can manage them in the dark, it's really hard to tell at what setting the dials for the temperature and blower are when not illuminated...

Would the illumination work if I take out the wires for the dim control from the harness to the aftermarket radio and connect only them to a new connector/harnes (metra 70-1720) to plug into the factory unit, or does it also need the battery power to make the illumination work?

You are correct. The illumination wiring is part of the 20-pin audio connector that you pulled off the factory unit to install your aftermarket stereo. So you are out of luck.

^I'm interested to know this as well. Is there ANY way to get the illumination to work?

I started a post a while back with some basic details of the Dual Climate control and the problems associated with removal of the stock head unit. Only some of the problems are mentioned in that post as I have since discovered a few more technical issues, but mainly with the complete removal and replacement of the Climate control/LCD display board.

I have found a way to retain the existing board but without the huge and mostly redundant screen and still allow climate control display with a small aux LCD.

Yes it can be done but it will not be an easy DIY for most people.

I will be removing the stock Head unit/LCD and Climate control unit within the next four months. I intend to post every step that is needed (with pictures) in order to retain the Climate control and get display information back.

The biggest problem still pertains to the poor quality and look of any aftermarket fascia to replace the stock unit. The only solution that I can see is to modify the existing fascia or make your own as other have done. Thatís another DIY that will put this conversion into the too hard basket for most of us.

At least with an Audio or double din install there is an (unattractive) aftermarket alternative. In my case I am fitting a 7Ē LCD and Car-PC and that rules aftermarket out completely. NOTE: Using a second hand navigation head-unit, even an incomplete one, is way too expensive and itís not what Iím after anyway.

BTW. For those who missed it, the Link a few posts ago appears to have information on a Y harness that will allow the existing head unit illumination to operate with an aftermarket unit in the lower slot.

I can verify that Metra Part # 99-7862 which is the dash kit for the cubby/pocket comes with a t/y harness that will keep the oem radio and climate controls powered up.

I use that harness in my 03 which has dual climate and everything is still powered up and lit up properly.
