Question 2006 Accord VP versus LX?

Hello -

First time poster here, and looking for some advice.

I budgeted a car purchase for next year, as my wife's Montero is overstaying its welcome. I let her drive my car, a 99 G20. Nice little car.

As luck would have it, I think the purchase will be sooner than that, as the Montero is asking for more money, which I'd rather put into the new car. After considering various alternatives, I think I'll go with the Accord, as it's into its mid life and well beyond the first year glitches that cars usually have (such as the new Alty and Camry, other alternatives).

Now to the nitty-gritty: is there a noticeable difference bewteen the VP and LX?

I'm curious about the upholstery. Is the fabric any different between the two?

What about the radio? I heard/read the VP has opnly two speakers connected. Is the wiring there for the other speakers so I could hook them up?

Any other stuff I'm missing besides the power mirrors? Rear defroster? Any other important stuff?

Thanks for your reply .

Yes the rear speaker wiring is there...the OEM speakers are only like $35 I think. There are instructions posted in the forums for installing them as well, but it's just as valuable to go ahead and put better ones in. Fabric the same I think....other stuff I'm not sure on because I have the LX SE, which had quite a few more goodies for not much more $$$.

I think just about all the differences have been covered. The upholstery may be slightly different but not a big deal overall, I think it will be just as durable if not more so. I know in other models like the Odyssey, the cloth LX and the cloth EX shows a significant difference in looks but they seem equally durable and are just about as comfortable.

If you want a 2006 you'd better hurry up. The 2007's are already in. I'd be surprised if you could find a 2006 VP anymore, LX maybe.

Besides what you said there is some small trim stuff that's different on the VP vs. all the other Accord's like black mirrors and black trim around the windows and the wheel covers are different than the 5 spoke look ones the LX has. Nothing really major that you'll miss out on.

Like JP said the SE has some more stuff and it is barely any more ($700). You'd get 4 wheel disc brakes instead of discs just on the front and alloy wheels. You'd also get an in dash cd changer and some carbon fiber trim accents inside. I could care less about the changer and trim accents but in my opinon the rear discs and alloy wheels are worth the $700.

The wiring is there for the VP as well.

I dont know if the upolstry is differnt in the LX, but I completey hate the materal in the VP. Their lint magnets, and since we have a black interior, you can clean it and in a week its covered in dust and lint again. And on top of that, we have Pugs, which shed short hair.

Bottom line, I will never buy a car again with cloth interior.

The LX has a rear stabilizer bar and the VP does not. The LX also has slightly larger tires: 205/65R15 vs 195/65R15. The LX is going to handle a little better and take corners a bit flatter. The LX will also add little niceties like power side mirrors, an extra power outlet and a coin holder in the front armrest, rear fold down armrest (with extra cup holders), illuminated visors mirrors, 6 speakers vs 2, and the overhead console with map lights and a sunglasses holder.

Both have all the basic interior creature comforts like A/C with cabin filter, cruise, power windows and locks, and the same awesome 2.4L engine.

You can't really go wrong with either. Let the pricing decide for you. I would negotiate with the dealer to see how low you can get the LX. IMO LXs are far more common on the lots and I would think the dealers would be more likely to deal with something on the lot - especially if you can still find an '06 sitting around. On that note, if they have a VP around, you can probably get them to go that much lower than the LX and save even more.

Drive them both to see if the tires and stabilizer bar make difference to you and get a first hand look at the cloth yourself.

Welcome and good luck. Keep us posted.

My advice: Go with the LX-SE. Or if not, the LX. I have the VP. I still love my car, but the little extras missing annoys me a little bit all the time. Expecially the missing map lights. There are a lot of other little things too. I thought I would be able to add anything I was missing relatively simply, but in fact it is difficult since the wiring harness is different in the LX, the VP, and all the different levels of accord. I havent seen this on any other car. Most things would just be a plug and play add. Not this time.

Overall. The VP is fine. Its a nice, nice car, but the others are better enough to justify it if the little things mean enough to you. Good luck. I think you will like the honda over the Mitsu.

one more thing VP doesn't have (which i couldn't believe when reading up on it) is the map pocket in the back of driver/passenger seats.

granted, it's probably a tiny annoyance compared to the price savings if you were inclined to go with a VP, but still. i carry a lot of maps in the car (that i actually do use on almost daily basis), and it'd suck not having that pocket to neatly tuck them away. the gap between the seat and the center box (whatever it's actually called) is tiny, so you couldn't really squeeze an atlas in there.

honda trying to save money on the VP by not including power mirrors--that i get. a little flap of fabric for a tiny little convenience--that i don't
