WIll this work to fix p0420

Hey guys, :-( so 3 months into owning my car. I get a CEL, so I stopped at Advance Auto and they said I got p0420 twice. They said it probally means both my o2 sensors are shot. 200$ for 2 sensors.... I googled and found this site:

)

Im not sure which one I would need. :-(

Based on previous discussion about P0420 codes and sensor replacements, I would recommend sticking with genuine Honda O2 sensors. You can buy them from the discount on-line dealers like Bernardi Honda ro Majestic Honda.

Thanks for the quick reply. I just wanna confirm with you one last thing before I order it. On this picture. I take it the two sensor setting off the p0420 is

Part# 016 SENSOR, LAF
Part# 017 SENSOR, OXYGEN (DENSO)

After I replaced it CEL should go away or I have to reset the ECU by pulling the battery?

You need the one that goes into the catalitic converter - item #17 for the P0420 code. Technically the code is telling you to replace the converter, but some owners have found changing the sensor gets rid of the code without the big expense of a converter replacement.
The other sensor is the primary 02 sensor that controls the fuel mixture.

Thanks dude. I was just so lost with the information on this code. There is so much information on it but haven't found a definate answer to the fix. I wasn't sure exactly what to buy.

I thought a P0420 usually means you should be replacing a catalytic converter and not a sensor...

BUMP

My 03 is throwing up 2 (that's what the guy at Autozone said) P0420 codes. It also has 175,000 miles on it so, to me at least, it honestly could be either the sensor or the catalytic converter. Is there any way to figure out which one is the culprit?

Would driving it like this cause any damage to the car?

Is a catalytic converter something an average Joe could replace? It seems like it is only three bolts on each side, but I could be wrong.

Can someone verify that there is only 1 catalytic converter in the 4 cylinder models?

Sorry for all of the questions, it's just that money is tighter than usual and I'm trying to be thrifty.

Won't/shouldn't cause damage, but you may run in "limp mode" which will have you running rich, wasting fuel.

Depending on where you live, the bolts can be quite rusted and (very) difficult to get off. If you have the proper tools, it's easy enough. You will need an O2 sensor removal tool that can be rented from autozone.

Thanks for your help and for the quick reply!

I tried searching, but I always had the P in there. Maybe that was my problem. Maybe it's just me...

No problem! FYI, I get 48 thread results when I search "P0420". Are you using numbers ONLY after the "P?"

Yes I am, but I only get 6 results.

Of course I limited my search to the 7th gen forum.

The "problems and solutions" forum is another good place to check.
