High Mileage Oil Experiment
I have a 2007 4CYL Accord with 273k miles. It consumes some oil (no visible leaks, no smoke, plugs look clean, runs fine). I was always curious to know if "High Mileage" oils would really reduce oil consumption so I tried an experiment.
I had "Mobil Super" 5W-20 conventional oil and was reliably going from completely full dipstick to bottom dot after 1000 miles.
I changed the oil and replaced it with Castrol GTX High Mileage 5W-20 (part synthetic) after 1000 miles I checked the oil for comparison and it was down only about 1/3 as far. So it appears, at least in this case, the high mileage part synthetic oil made a significant reduction in oil consumption. My driving was similar mix of highway/local in both cases.
I haven't been able to find many real world stories about whether high mileage oils have been successful, so I figured I'd post my experience. I would be interested to hear if others had similar results or not.
P.S. I am not trying to advocate for any particular brands -- I just chose these because I got them cheap at Walmart, about $14 for the Mobil and about $18 for the Castrol High Mileage (5qts).
