OEM Leather replacement options

Hi everyone,

I've searched the forums and haven't found any specific answers to my OEM leather questions. My 2003 Accord I just purchased has some wear on the driver's seat lower cushion. I've talked with several sources, including my local Honda Dealers, and the material is over $600 just for the leather seat piece! And, this price is just the seat bottom cover - not the upper portion! Can anyone give me some advice on where I can source these OEM covers or any type of cover that would match the OEM leather for less than Honda's price...Katzkin, etc?

Thanks so much this forum is wonderful!

I read some really good things about Katzkin on this very forum:

Also here's a good link to thread on this forum: Anyone thinking about Katzkin??

After looking at their website I would seriously consider getting their leather if mine ever wore out. I remember reading that their leather is much thicker than the OEM Honda leather as well and offers many more color options.

Thanks Wes. I actually talked with a local Katzkin Authorized Installation Center and they want $1400 + tax to install a new interior! Wow, that seems high compared to the prices I've seen others talk of. Any idea on whether the Katzkin cover would match the OEM leather well-enough that I could just do the driver's seat or bottom cushion? Sad thing is, the rest of the interior looks great!

Thanks for the input.

car-part.com Find a used one if the rest of your interior looks good.

In your situation, I see (3) options...

(i) Get an after-market leather-interior conversion (ie. Katzkin, Soft-Trim, etc'). FWIW, I got my Katzin leather-interior installed by my dealer when I bought my '08 Accord sedan for $1100. That was in late April, early May. It came w/ a 5-year limited warranty, as well. It should be noted that the Katzkin leather-interior components are of a different grain/finishing vs. OEM leather-interior components, so mixing the bits wouldn't be aesthetically appealing.

(ii) Get matching OEM leather seat-covering inserts/pieces from the dealer parts dept' / online discount OEM parts-vendor or source from a wrecked/totaled model similar to yours from a salvage yard (ie. H&A Recycling in CA).

(iii) Get a mobile leather-interior repair specialist or a local-area after-market custom-interior/upholstery shop to 'redo' your seat. This involves resurfacing the leather, adding filler for cracks/splitting/wear, dying & texturing the leather-grain to match the original color/appearance, sealing the leather for long-term protection.

I would personally go for the third option, at this point in time.

Unless the leather is physically RIPPED into two halves, there is a lot of stuff one can do to repair leather...I agree with the above post and recommend you ask your Honda dealership who they get to re-condition their used-vehicle inventory, especially what company they use to prep/repair the leather of their used cars...this guy is probably the best person who can give you suggestions as to how to repair your leather seat...

I am not happy to hear a relatively young car like yours has already a leather wear problems... I was under (aparently wrong) impression that the leather should last much longer than 5-6 years...

Would you please care to post some pictures of this leather problem or at least provide a more detailed description and state how many miles on your car's odometer?

I can try and take some pics of the worn area but it is hard to get it to show in photos. To describe the worn area, it is the outer edge of the driver's seat where you slide in-out of the car. I'm very careful with my exit and entry and the leather is still very soft but worn on this one edge. Funny enough, the upper bolster is perfect.

At this time, I think I'm going to opt for the factory replacement option as Honda is stepping up and paying 50% parts/labor for the repair. My car also has 63k on the odometer.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. I'll keep you posted with the final results and I may still research a repair shop if Honda wants an arm and a leg even after their offer.
