Question Tire size question. 215/50r17

Getting new tires soon. My accord coupe now has 215/55r17 tires with the hfp factory lowered kit. The oem tire size is 215/50r17 which I will most likely buy tires at this size next time ( I like a lower profile but don't want to go to low as 215/45. But I cannot find an exact answer this this ?
... Can I fit a 225/50r17 on my 17" rims instead of 215/50r17? I know people say a wider tire is better for traction etc and I like a wider tire and since they have 215/55 on them now assuming clearance won't be an issue. But will this wide of a tire (225) fit the 17" rim with factory specs of 215? I mean how can the tire fit on the rim, will it not be too wide? Any chance it wil just "pop off" the rim if I hit a pothole it something? Is this not advisable? Or am I mistaken somewhere. If the 225/50 will fit inseatd of the factory 215/50 what are the advantages if any? Thanks!!

OEM Tire: 215-50R17
Rim Width Range: 6-7.5"
Meas Rim Width: 7"

NEW Tire: 225-50R17
Rim Width Range: 6-8"
Meas Rim Width: 7"

Specification | Sidewall | Radius | Diameter | Circumference | Revs/Mile | Difference
215/50-17 ----- 4.2in ---- 12.7in --- 25.5in ------- 80.0in --------- 792 -------- 0.0%
225/50-17 ----- 4.4in ---- 12.9in --- 25.9in ------- 81.2in --------- 780 -------- 1.5%

You'll be fine. But...

To be honest, the difference between the two are so slim you're not going to notice any real advantages / differences. Your speedometer is going to be slightly off and you're going to be paying more for the 225/15's (larger tire, more rubber = increased price). The choice is up to you.

Thanks for the reply. So the 215 will have a lower profile sidewall compared to the 225? Thanks

Yes, the OEM 215-50R17's will have a slightly smaller sidewall (0.2")

The load rating is xl whatever that means. The are $15 more per tire. So basically a rim has a range of widths that a tire can be to fit it?

One last question. I have on 215/55r17 now. So I'm guessing 225/50r17 will be slightly lower profile than 215/55 but more than 215/50. And it is hfp factory lowered ( I may need to measure ) but will I have any issues with rubbing of the fenders if I go with 225/50? What about 225/45? Sorry guys but I need to figure this out lol.

Looks like 225/50r17 is it then. I think 225/45 will have too much of a gap. Thanks for all the help. I will be buying these in 225/50

When the time comes. 70,000 mile rating and awesome reviews at mid level price!

It means Extra Load they are usually inflated to a higher PSI and can handle more weight.

I have the 215/50/17 on my factory HFP lowered Accord now, and my speedometer is ~2-3mph off at 80 (Got a ticket a few years back, my speedo said 90, his radar picked me up at 87 87 87 87). I would think the 225's would be the same, as that is just a difference in width.

How accurate is yours with the 215/55/17? I have a set of these I got for $100 for winter, with about 5k miles on them.

BTW, anyone have a set of these 17" wheels they want to get rid of? I would like to have a set for winter.

Not sure how accurate exactly, car came with 215/55. There's a mechanical speed thing I'm my neighborhood and it's flashes the 40 speed lint but goes away when the speedo says about 42. So the speedo may be reading 42 when I'm going 40. Does that make sense? Still not sure to go with 225/50 or 225/45. The 45 will obv. Be lower profile but I don't want a huge wheel gap. Thoughts?
