Apple Carplay vs. built-in sat nav?

Just wondering what everyone's thoughts on this would be, especially for those who have used both. Is Carplay a suitable replacement for a dedicated built-in sat nav? Or does it work better/worse? (Same question could apply for Android auto.. but I don't have one of those phones!)

I would say Car Play and Android Auto should make built-in navigation obsolete. At least both will always getting update without "paying" for an update then a few years down the road the navigation system won't be supported. The down side is having to pay for data while moving. I believe there is always an option to download offline map for Google Maps for a specific area though.

Also Android Auto (not sure about Car Play) is fully integrated with the system therefore turn by turn instruction is also displayed on iMID.

Both CarPlay and Android Auto will work great when you have a good LTE signal. If you head to the hinterlands into sketchy service, they are worthless as navigation devices. Your car's built-in nav will still work flawlessly.

For me that wouldn't be an issue as I'm only in this situation once a year when we go to Lake Gaston for vacation - horrible cell service around the lake.

FWIW, I used both on the way home from work tonight to see how they stack up (50 mile drive from outside Boston to RI). Short answer: They both work well and do the same thing in different ways with different graphics -- the hitch being that you do need a cell signal for Apple Maps and Google Maps to stay real-time. I kind of like the way traffic is shown on the Apple Maps (I have an iPhone) compared to the on-board system, but either is good. The graphics in Maps also seems a little more detailed than in the Garmin system.

I've only had my Couple (and CarPlay) for a few days, so I'm still sussing out which one is "best."

So I guess it's fair to say if you have carplay, you don't need sat nav, in most cases?

One other thing is that using CarPlay means using data on your cell plan, to stream the map data. You can cache map data for google maps, but I think it's limited to a 50 mile radius for the download so useless for long trips.

I know for myself, if getting a 2016 I'd still want the convenience of built in Nav.

Current Honda = 2015 Accord sedan: WOP Ex-L V6-6AT/Nav
Previous Hondas = 2007 Civic Ex Sedan (5spd-AT) & 1973 Civic 1200cc 5spd-MT hatchback

I've used Waze, Apple Maps and Google Maps extensively on my phone. Even continuously on a 3,000 mile round trip. I didn't see a big spike in data use. But I'm a pretty heavy data user - streaming music. If you're a data sipper on an unusually small plan this might be an issue. But if you've got just a regular plan of at least 1 or a couple of GB per month, I don't really think this will be an issue.

Generally, correct. You are using data, though I don't know that it's an obscene amount; and you might have some issues if you're out of a cell service area. Other than that, CarPlay is definitely a value-add, whether you get the built-in Nav system or not.
FYI, if you plug in a destination on either system, then switch, the navigation to your destination only works on whichever system you're viewing (i.e., you can't use the built-in system AND the Apple/Google Maps nav at the same time).
