Carmax Appraisal

Just of of curiosity I decided to have carmax appraise my car.

I learned today that because the Accord has a unibody any sort of repair to the quarter panel area is considered frame damage. Never knew that, and apparently my car has had frame damage. If your car should ever have this type of repair, be sure to pursue insurance (if not at fault) for loss in value due to prior 'frame' damage. Just a word to the wise.

Anyways Carmax offered $2,000 bucks for my 99 Accord, with 152.7k miles almost. I included their assessment.

Dang, that stinks it's only worth $2,000. Good to know about the frame damage though, thanks for posting.

No problem

That $2,000 is wholesale value since carmax cannot sell my car on their lot. I'm confident I could get $4,000 from a private buyer after reviewing my local competition.

If you google CarMax appraisal's you will have lots of reading. They normally take $1000 off of the trade in value. If a CarMax employee wanted to buy your car they could buy it for $3000. So the company still makes money.

They offered me $2000 for mine also. They said the high miles (166k) affected the value eventhough it never had any accidents or other issues. I watched them inspect it and the inspector was pretty knowlegeable. Taught me how they check for accidents. One thing they do is examine the screws that attatch to the fender. If the screws have any paint missing on them they know the fender was taken off for some reason.

My 1st car was a champagne 1995 Accord 4-door. I bought it two years ago and it had 132,xxx miles on it and they were selling it on the lot for about $5,700 or so if I can remember correctly. I ended up paying a little over $4,000. The fact that they're trying to give you $2,000 is just stupid. I'd sell it privately and take the $4,000

I sold carmax a 2000 civic last year for a grand. It had a big hole in the door from being hit by a 18 wheeler. The lugs took out a perfectly round section.

The car hadn't been maintained, the windshield had a fresh crack, rear bumper was hanging from a hit and run, plus a lot more.

The trucker's insurance paid about $2600 so I was happy with getting rid of the car for a grand. I'm sure they sold that car for a lot more but it wasn't worth it to me.

If I got that much for a POS civic, I would expect more for your car even with the past damage.

If you visit the website of their in-house auction (carmaxauctions.com), you can see that they sell off basically everything that isn't perfect. Paintwork is an issue usually cited as to why they are auctioning the car off. Thus, I guess it makes sense that your car is of little value to them. Your run of the mill dealer might pay a little more.

CarMax just offered me $3500 for my '04 EX-L (K24) with 195,000 miles on it.

KBB says it's worth about a grand more as a trade in.

I looked at an '04 6 speed in Orlando that definitely had been repaired. There was even sand in the headlight lens and obvious paint imperfections. I brought that up to the guy and he was like "Oh interesting... You want a job with us as a buyer?" I'm not sure what game they're trying to play but it was on their lot as retail and was not perfect.

There are obviously exceptions to the rule, but on the whole it seems like they try to avoid cars like that.

Was he being serious about the job offer? Or was the guy just getting smart with you?

The one time I went to a Carmax the salesguy went on and on about how they only put nearly perfect cars on their lot. I was surprised to see later that several of their cars had been in accidents (from the Autocheck reports).
