Need a car. opinion on Mazda Protege

Hi.
I need to buy a car on a budget of about $2000.
Looking for small to medium car, Japanese 4 cyl. auto for getting around.
I have seen a lot of 2000-2002 Proteges for a really cheap.
Is this a good car?
If you have any experience or info. let me know.

Also considering Civic and Matrix, but these are more expensive options.

Thanks

I don't have much experience with Potreges but I just wanted to add...

If you're considering Toyota Matrix's, also consider Pontiac Vibe's. They are just a Pontiac re-badged Matrix. Usually they seem to be a bit cheaper.

I worked with a guy who had a protege, couldn't tell you what year, but when it traded it for a Mazdaspeed3 it had 350K (KM) on it. It was a manual though. I'd say your pretty safe when it comes to Japanese, I wouldn't get an older Korean car (Kia, Hyundai), 10 years back their quality wasn't as good as they are now where as the Japanese brands kind of seem to be doing the oposite, quality was good back in the day now it's more quantity vs quality (so some on here have suggested).

They were good cars in their day. If you can find one that's been cared for it should serve you well.

I think they have the same rust problem that the 3's do.

Rust is not a big deal, I know for Mazda's its a common problem. Starting to think about the 6GEN Accord also.

My best friend bought two of them back in 2001. One for himself and one for his mother. He just gave his to his nephew who turned 16; his mother's is still running with minimal maintenance 11 years later.

Pretty sure he put over 150,000 miles on his, but I'm not sure how much his mom drives. They were built to last, for sure.

To be honest with a budget of two grand you need to look at anything and everything that runs reasonably well. There are tons of candidates so don't lock in to the Protege.

The old Corollas (particularly those from 93-97) are worth a strong consideration in that price range... these cars are absolutely incredible when it comes to reliability and longevity. The Protege was definitely a good car, as well. I would also consider (believe it or not) the Ford Escorts, which I believe may have been mechanically similar to the Mazda (?). I do know that they were generally very solid cars and a good cheap alternative.

There are a lot of cars in this price range, you are correct. I want to narrow it down to the best candidates. Pick the best running one, with the least Km or problems.
